Der Dschannat ul-Baqi liegt in unmittelbarer Nähe des Mausoleums des Propheten Mohammed (saws). Auf diesem Friedhof wurden zahlreiche große Persönlichkeiten der islam. Geschichte, darunter einige Mütter der Gläubigen und vier Imame der Schiiten begraben. Grabsteine, an denen die Gräber der Gefährten des Propheten, der Mütter der Gläubigen und der Angehörigen der Prophetenfamilie zu erkennen waren, wurden nach der Auffassung des Wahhabismus, dass man Gräber nicht auf diese Art u. Weise schmücken darf, zerstört. Es sollte nicht mehr erkennbar sein, welches Grab an welcher Stelle war. Einge Gräber, wie das der Amina, der Mutter des Propheten (saws), wurden sogar mit Benzin überschüttet. Dabei ist eindeutig belegt, dass der Prophet (saws) einen Stein auf dem Grab von Uthman ibn Mazun aufstellte und sagte: "Hiermit kennzeichne ich die Grabstätte meines (Milch)bruders, und später soll darin begraben werden, wer von meinen Angehörigen stirbt." (Überlieferung von Abu Daud in seinen Sunan im Kapitel über Begräbnisse. Ibn Hajar hat den Isnad in seinem Talkhis al-habir für hasan erklärt) Der Besuch des Friedhofs wird den Menschen heute durch kurze u. begrenzte Besuchszeiten erschwert, Frauen dürfen den Friedhof überhaupt nicht besuchen (ohne dass man einen Grund dafür angeben kann). Eine Annäherung an die Gräber der vier schiitischen Imame ist de facto unmöglich. In der Nähe des al-Baqi wurde ein Verhör- und Prozessbüro eingerichtet, wo Menschen der Prozess gemacht wird, die dabei beobachtet werden, wie sie z.B. öfters das Grab des Propheten (saws) besucht haben.
