Exclusive: Keys to Syria war given from Qatar to Saudi Arabia
Bouthaina Shaaban, Syrian president's political and media advisor, says the United States has adopted a hypocritical stance toward Syria, but it calls it a "policy" which we now witness is showing signs of failure.
Speaking at an exclusive interview with Al-Alam in Syrian capital Damascus Shaaban said, the United States is struggling to make an exit for itself from the chaos it has been leading in Syria which not only targeted Syria, but was also aimed at "changing the image of the region".
"Since three years ago and start of the extensive war on Syria, we saw that international criteria have changed; that's why I think the result of this war is going to show which axis is more powerful and will stay in the region... The result will as well determine characteristics of the regional balance," she said.
She then referred to changes undergone in the war Syria has been dealing with, saying that, "at the beginning, it was Qatar which led the war and unfortunately made the Arab League to accompany it, but later the keys to the war on Syria were given to Saudi Arabia".
"If we set aside recent agenda in which Saudi Arabia and US are getting closer over Syria, we can say that Qatar, Turkey and then Saudi Arabia were playing as US and West's agents against the resistance axis, and unfortunately it is the truth," she said.
"What came at a surprise was the fact that those who called themselves Arab countries, were at head of the arrow that targeted Syria, however, this revealed the realities," Shaaban added.
The Syrian official further referred to the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his government's role in the ongoing war in her country and said, "Erdogan government thought it had the region's situation under control, and of course, I say Erdogan government, because I want to make it clear that my assertions are not against Turkish people".
"Erdogan government is a Brotherhood government, and he proved this by supporting the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood; unfortunately they came to act with Ottoman thoughts".
She stressed, "the regional conspiracy was with no doubt, done with assistance of the US and the West, which not only aimed for Syria, it had Iran, Hezbollah, resistance and anyone who said no to the US under its target".
Shaaban said the US "knows well where it has ended up in Syria". She added recent reports of US envoy Robert Ford getting retired because "he misses his family" after he led different groups in their war to topple the government for nearly three years, was one of the signs showing the US is trying to make a way out of Syria. "They want to prevent further losses as much as possible."
"The American administration has actually adopted a hypocritical stance on Syria, but from their point of view all these hypocrisy is politics."
"If we take a look into (US secretary of State) John Kerry's recent trip to the region, we see that he speaks with a different tone in different places. Seeing such an act from a person who comes from a major economic and military power, without a doubt shows US policies are shaking."
She added that US President Barack Obama has only two more years in office and now he is trying not to leave a negative image of himself.
"Recent changes in US relations with Iran and the agreement-like event between US and Russia are all parts of Obama's attempts to introduce himself as an American president who stood against wars and tried for peace in the world."
Shaaban said, the US has now left things somehow to Saudi Arabia, to conduct the war in its own way.
"Saudi Arabia is now giving financial and military support to the al-Nusra Front, Islamic State of Iraq and Levant and all other terrorist groups," she added.
She stressed however that, "I believe that they will fail, especially at a time when national reconciliation is improving fast inside Syria".
"Even those Syrians who were deceived are now changing their minds. They are now facing with the dangers and the truths."
Syria sank into war in March 2011 when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.
The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

400 evacuated from Syria's Homs despite militants threat
More than 400 civilians have been evacuated from the besieged districts of the Syrian city of Homs, Syrian state TV has reported.
The state television quoted Homs Governor Talal al-Barazi as saying on Sunday that 420 besieged people "came out today from the Old City districts of Homs, and the operation is still under way."
Reports said the operation took place despite raging fire from foreign-backed militants in the Arab country.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fire hit the district of Qarabis in Homs, where dozens of civilians had gathered for evacuation by the United Nations.
The evacuation of people is part of a three-day ceasefire brokered by the UN between the Syrian army and the foreign-backed militants.
On Friday, 83 women, children and elderly people trapped in the beleaguered city were bussed out to a safe zone.
The deal also allows the entrance of humanitarian assistance for civilians who choose to stay. The two sides had agreed on a pause in fighting as the deal is being implemented.
However, a joint UN-Red Crescent aid convoy in Homs came under attack on Saturday. Four members of the Syrian Red Crescent and a truck driver were injured after mortars and shots were fired at the convoy.
The Syrian national television quoted Barazi as saying that two vehicles carrying aid supplies had entered the Old City, but militants had targeted the route with mortar fire and prevented more vehicles from entering.

AIPAC stresses support for anti-Iran sanction bill
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has denied recent press reports over the pro-Israel lobby group supporting the White House in delaying a controversial anti-Iran sanction bill in the US Senate.
"I am writing today to correct some mischaracterizations in the press regarding our position on the Senate Iran bill. Some have suggested that by not calling for an immediate vote on the legislation, we have abandoned our support for the bill. Nothing could be further from the truth," AIPAC President Michael Kassen said in a statement.
"In fact, we remain strongly committed to the passage of the Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act," he added.
The statement came after the AIPAC announced that it agreed with Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez "that there should not be a vote at this time on the measure."
Menendez and Sen. Mark Kirk are lead sponsors of the Senate sanctions bill.
The AIPAC president praised American senators for cosponsoring the bill.
"I want to thank you for your hard work thus far in earning the support of 59 senators for the Menendez-Kirk bill. We still have much work to do over the coming months. It will be a long struggle, but one that we are committed to fighting," Kassen said.
"We will continue to work closely with friends on both sides of the aisle, in both the House and Senate, to ensure that everything is done to prevent a nuclear weapons-capable Iran," he wrote.
US President Barack Obama strongly opposed the efforts while the nuclear negotiations are underway, warning that he would veto the legislation if it is passed.
In his State of the Union speech, Obama said, "Let me be clear: if this Congress sends me a new sanctions bill now that threatens to derail these talks, I will veto it."
Last month, two Senate Democratic aides admitted that the sanctions legislation is already dead despite AIPAC's efforts to derail nuclear negotiations.
"The sanctions bill is on ice while the diplomatic process plays out," a senior Senate Democratic aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Huffington Post.
"The fact that cosponsors of the bill are now publicly distancing themselves from the measure shows just how hasty and ill-conceived this effort has been," the aide said.

Saudi cleric: Takfiris use youths as 'firewood' for their conflicts
A Saudi prominent cleric says Takfiri groups as well as certain regional and international intelligence bodies are using Saudi youths as "firewood" for their own conflicts and problems.
During his praying sermon on Friday in Saudi Arabia's eastern city of Qatif, Sheikh Hassan Saffar criticized extremist groups for their "radical and terrorist acts" and deceiving young people to change their ways "toward havoc".
Saudi Arabia has been witnessing a surge in people leaving their country to join terrorist and militant groups, especially in Syria which has been gripped with a massive charged-insurgency led by multi-national militants.
"Takfiri way of thinking which is clearly observed in education methods, religious orders, religious sermons and public media is providing the base for this radical and terrorist approach for Saudi youths," he said.
The Shia cleric, who is well known for his attempts to ease religious tensions -- especially between Sunnis and Shias -- in his country, warned that the responsibility lies largely over those who promoted violence under the pretext of Jihad (holy war).
There are many clerics in Saudi Arabia who have been encouraging people to go fight as a "religious duty" in Syria, where the war, marked with extremist acts of violence, has been going on for nearly three years and left some 130,000 people dead.
"Nobody is allowed to be violent toward someone who has different religious or political views. This is terrorism, destruction and aberration," he said.
Sheikh Saffar said certain regional and international intelligence bodies were also responsible for a "wave of terrorist acts" among Saudi youths, adding that, "these intelligence centers are entering our youths in destructive and terroristic wars".
They are using young minds as "firewoods" to lead their own way and they will turn against these youths as soon as they are done with their games, he added.
The Saudi reformist cleric said a "blocked political scene" and "lack of alternative options" has caused widespread disappointment among Saudi youths which makes them easily get deceived by ill-minded people who depict a false image of religion for them.
"Everybody is responsible for these deceived youths; young people whose acts has brought nothing but destruction of their country, tarnishing our religion, violating security and stability and bringing fear anywhere they go," he added.
Considered as one of the most important Shia leaders in Saudi Arabia, Hassan Saffar established the Shia Islamic Reform Movement in the early 1990s, which sought to improve the relations between the Shia and the ruling Sunni family in the country.
On October 23, 2009, The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre mentioned him as one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world.

Above 1,400 Saudis fought in Syria since 2011: Report
More than 1,400 Saudis have left home to join the multi-national war in Syria to topple the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a new report says.
Saudi Arabia's newspaper Al Watan put number of Saudi militants in Syria at more than 1,400 in a recent report, mentioning that most of them are teenagers.
The report added that around 20 percent of the Saudi militants who have returned home say they had been deceived into fighting in Syria.
In December 2013, the International Center for the Study of Radicalization (ICSR) released a report which indicated that between 3,300 and 11,000 militants from over 70 countries have been fighting against the Syrian government from late 2011 to December 10, 2013.
"These figures include those who are currently present (in Syria) as well as those who have since returned home, been arrested or killed," said ICSR, which is a partnership of five universities based at King's College London.
Eighty percent of the foreign militants are Arabs and Europeans, mostly from France and Britain, ICSR added.

„Das ist beschämend, Herr Botschafter!"
Liebe Freunde! Ich bin richtig gern Deutscher. Heute aber schäme ich mich. Für die schikanöse und herabwürdigende Art, in der die deutsche Botschaft und das Konsulat in Kabul versuchen, die Reise von fünf Kindern aus Kunduz nach Deutschland zu behindern. Die neun- bis zwölfjährigen Jungen und Mädchen hatten bei dem Bombenanschlag auf Kunduz Väter und Brüder verloren. Ich hatte sie für zweiwöchige Ferien in Deutschland eingeladen.
Am Donnerstag wollten sich die Kleinen im deutschen Konsulat von Kabul ihre Visa abholen. Sie hatten alles dabei, was man dazu normalerweise braucht. Ihre Pässe und eine beglaubigte Erklärung der Stiftung Sternenstaub, dass wir für alle Kosten einschließlich Krankenkasse aufkommen würden. Auch die Flüge waren gebucht. Morgen sollte die große Reise losgehen.
Doch zur Überraschung aller wurden die Kinder im deutschen Konsulat wie der letzte Dreck behandelt, im Stehen abgefertigt und aufgefordert, noch ein paar Dutzend Dokumente nachzuliefern. Zum Beispiel:
- Übersetzte und beurkundete Personalausweise, obwohl sie alle ihre Pässe vorgelegt hatten.
- Übersetzte und beurkundete Personalausweise ihrer zum Teil totgebombten Väter.
- Übersetzte und beurkundete Heiratsurkunde(!) des sie begleitenden Leiters des Waisenhauses - sowie übersetzte und beurkundete Personalausweise seiner Ehefrau und seiner Kinder, obwohl die gar nicht mitreisten. Usw. usw.
Ein Teil der Dokumente ist – wie jeder Afghanistankenner weiß – nur schwer zu beschaffen und oft nur nach Bezahlung kräftiger Bestechungssummen zu erhalten. In Afghanistan herrscht außerdem seit 35 Jahren Krieg. Viele Dokumente sind zerstört.
Mir fehlen die Worte, um die Enttäuschung der Kinder zu beschreiben, die mit leuchtenden Augen im Konsulat erschienen waren und wie Kleinkriminelle wieder weggeschickt wurden. Von einem demonstrativ schnöselhaften deutschen Konsularbeamten.
Das ist das letzte Glied einer langen Kette beschämender Handlungen der deutschen Behörden gegenüber den Opfern von Kunduz. Ich erinnere hier nur an die traurigsten Ereignisse dieser Tragödie:
- 2009 Tötung von mindestens 137 Afghanen beim Bombardement von Kunduz. Oberst Klein hatte es mit der Lüge durchgesetzt, er habe „Feindberührung". In Wirklichkeit war er 15 Kilometer von den steckengebliebenen Tanklastern entfernt. Nach den Dokumenten und Aussagen der Dorfältesten waren 132 der Ermordeten Zivilisten, darunter 36 Kinder. Nur fünf der Toten waren Taliban.
- Abfertigung der Opferfamilien mit beleidigenden 3.600 Euro, egal wie viele Familienmitglieder sie verloren hatten.
- Verweigerung des Besuchs auch nur eines Mitglieds der deutschen Bundesregierung bei den Opferfamilien oder wenigstens einer offiziellen Entschuldigung.
- Beförderung von Oberst Klein zum Brigadegeneral.
- Ablehnung der Schadensersatzklage des klagenden Bauern Abdul Hannan, der zwei Kinder und einen Neffen verloren hatte, sowie der Witwe Qureisha, die ihren Mann und Vater von sechs Kindern verloren hatte. Begründung des Landgerichts Bonn: Oberst Klein, habe keine "Amtspflichten" verletzt.
Den bettelarmen Klägern wurden außerdem die Anwalts- und Gutachterkosten der Bundesregierung in Höhe von 10.000 Euro aufgebrummt. Die Witwe Qureisha hatte jedoch nicht einmal 120 Dollar, um sich Brennholz für diesen Winter zu kaufen.
- Schikanöse Behinderung der Reise der fünf Kinder von Kunduz, mit der wir ihnen wieder etwas Mut machen wollten. Wir wollten zeigen, dass die deutsche Bevölkerung ganz anders ist als Oberst Klein und jene deutschen Politiker und Beamten, die nicht den Anstand besitzen, den menschlichen, seelischen und materiellen Schaden der Operation Kunduz irgendwie wieder gut zu machen.
Ich habe mich am Wochenende beim deutschen Botschafter in Kabul in aller Form über das Verhalten seiner Botschaft und des Konsulats beschwert. Ich habe ihm geschrieben, dass ich dieses Benehmen beschämend finde. Außenminister Steinmeier habe ich eine Kopie zukommen lassen.
Ich schreibe diese Zeilen voller Zorn, Bitterkeit und Scham. Ich habe die vergangene und jetzige Bundesregierung mit gewählt. Ihr Verhalten in Sachen Kunduz jedoch finde ich erbärmlich. Ich schäme mich unendlich für die kaltherzigen Diplomaten und Politiker, die diese Tragödie in Berlin und Kabul bearbeiten.
