Es trat die Zeit des Abendgebetes (Maghrib) ein, und sie mussten jemanden unter sich auswählen, der das Gebet leitete. Die Wahl war nicht schwierig, denn al-Kisai war ein namhafter Rezitator des Qur'ans; bis zum heutigen Tage ist er als einer der 'Sieben Berühmten Rezitatoren' bekannt. Nachdem das Gebet begonnen hatte, und er mit dem Rezitieren der Eröffnungssure fertig war, fuhr al-Kisai mit der Sure al-Kafirun (die Ungläubigen) fort: „Sprich (O Muhammad zu diesen Ungläubigen): "O ihr Ungläubigen (an Allah, Seine Einheit, Seine Engel, Seine Bücher, Seine Gesandten, dem Tag der Auferstehung, und al-Qadr, etc.) .." (109:1) Obwohl dies eines der kürzesten Kapitel ist, das sogar von den meisten Kindern auswendig gelernt wird, machte al-Kisai einen Fehler in seiner Rezitation. Als das Gebet zu Ende war, rief al-Yazidi , seine große Verwunderung zur Schau stellend, aus: „Der Rezitator und Imam von Kufa in Verwirrung, Fehler begehend, und das „Kapitel der Ungläubigen"vergessend!" Als dann später in der Nacht die Zeit zum Verrichten des Nachtgebetes (Isha) eintrat, wartete al-Yazidi nicht und stellte sich selbst nach vorne, um die Menschen im Gebet zu leiten. Sobald das Gebet anfing, begann seine Stimme zu zittern, und er vergaß jenes Kapitel im Qur'an, das am leichtesten von allen ist – „die Eröffnungssure": „Alles Lob gebührt Allah, dem Herrn der Welten…" (1:2) Nachdem das Gebet zu Ende war, drehte sich al-Kisai zu al-Yazidi und sagte: „Halte deine Zunge zurück und sprich nicht, andernfalls wirst du auf die Probe gestellt. Wahrlich, man wird garantiert auf die Probe gestellt, wenn man den Mund öffnet [um die Fehler von anderen anzuprangern]."
