Ich wurde in Krakau, Polen, am 8. Januar 1900 als Sohn einer Familie, die zum polnischen Adel gehört, geboren. Mein Vater war Atheist, aber er war tolerant genug, seinen Kindern eine Erziehung im römisch-katholischen Glauben zu erlauben. Die Mehrheit der polnischen Bevölkerung bekannte sich mehr oder weniger oberflächlich zu dieser Religion, und es war auch der Glaube meiner Mutter. So nahm ich in meiner Kindheit eine aufrichtige Achtung für diese Religion an und betrachtete sie als einen wichtigen Faktor im Leben des einzelnen und der Gemeinschaft. Ein anderer Charakterzug im Heim meiner Eltern bestand in der kosmopolitischen Atmosphäre. In seinen jungen Jahren hatte mein Vater verschiedene europäische Länder bereist und er sprach oft von seinen Abenteuern. Diese Atmosphäre hatte zur Folge, dass mir nationale, kulturelle und rassistische Vorurteile fremd waren. Ich betrachtete mich als Weltbürger. Das dritte Merkmal meines elterlichen Heims war der Geist des Mittelwegs. Obwohl mein Vater aus einer aristokratischen Familie stammte, verachtete er die müßigen Klassen und hasste alle Formen von Diktatur und Unterdrückung. Aber er missbilligte auch revolutionäre Aktionen gegen die öffentliche Ordnung. Er schätzte den Fortschritt, der in den besten Traditionen der Vergangenheit begründet war. Er war ein beispielhafter „Mann des Mittelwegs". Aus diesem Grunde war es nicht verwunderlich, dass ich zu einem eigenständigen Denker wurde, mit besonderem Interesse an sozialen Problemen. Ich suchte überall den Mittelweg, der zu Lösungen von verschiedenen Schwierigkeiten im sozialen, politischen und kulturellen Leben führte. Mir schien immer, dass Extreme der menschlichen Natur zuwiderlaufen und dass, infolgedessen, nur Kompromisse die Menschheit retten können. Ich war davon überzeugt, dass die Organisation der menschlichen Gesellschaft auf disziplinierte Freiheit gestützt sein muss, mit anderen Worten: Es muss eine Ordnung geben, welche Freiheit und Tradition respektiert, und es muss eine Angleichung der Tradition an die herrschenden Verhältnisse erreicht werden. Kein Wunder also, dass ich, der ich im Mittelweg aufgewachsen bin, selbst ein „Mann des Mittelwegs" bin, man könnte mich also als „progressiven Traditionalisten" bezeichnen. Als Sechzehnjähriger wurde ich entschieden skeptisch gegenüber den verschiedenen Dogmen der „unfehlbaren" römisch-katholischen Kirche. Ich weigerte mich, an die Heilige Dreifaltigkeit, die Verwandlung, die Vermittlung der Priester zwischen Gott und den Menschen, die Unfehlbarkeit des Papstes und die Wirkung aller magischen Worte und Gesten zu glauben. Ich konnte mich nicht dazu bereit finden, Maria, den Heiligen, den Reliquien, Bildern und Statuen zu dienen. Schließlich verlor ich allen Glauben und religiöse Fragen waren mir gleichgültig. Der Ausbruch des zweiten Weltkrieges bewirkte eine religiöse Renaissance in mir. Gott öffnete meine Augen und ich sah, dass die Menschheit Ideale braucht und dass sie es sich nicht leisten kann, ohne diese Ideale auszukommen, wenn sie der Ausrottung entgehen will. Es war mir klar, dass nur die Religion der Welt solche Ideale geben konnte. Andererseits war mir auch klar, dass der moderne Mensch sich nicht mit einer Religion zufrieden geben kann, deren Dogmen und Riten der Vernunft und dem Verstand widersprechen. Abgesehen davon glaubte ich, dass die Menschheit nur durch eine Religion, die eine vollständige Gesetzessammlung enthält, geführt werden könne. Auf der Suche nach der Wahrheit meines geistigen Vaterlandes studierte ich die Ideologien verschiedener Religionen, insbesondere die Geschichte und die Grundsätze der Quäker, Unitarier, des Buddhismus und der Bahai, aber keine dieser Religionen befriedigten mich völlig. Schließlich entdeckte ich den Islâm. Eine kleine Zeitschrift mit dem Titel: „Islamo esperantiste regardata" von Herrn Ismail Colin Evans, einem englischen Muslim, in Esperanto geschrieben, öffnete mir im Februar 1949 meine Ohren für die Stimme Gottes. Später bekam ich ein Heft mit dem Titel „Islamo chies religio" von Dâru t-Tablîghi l-Islâm, P. O., Box 112, Kairo. Ich habe bemerkt, dass der Islâm mit meinem Gedanken und mit der Ideologie, in der ich aufwuchs, verwandt ist. Ich habe im Islâm eine vollkommene und vollständige Gesetzessammlung für das Leben gefunden. Diese Gesetze sind in der Lage, den einzelnen und die Gemeinschaft zu Gottes Reich auf Erden zu führen; sie sind aber auch elastisch genug, um sich den modernen Verhältnissen anzupassen. Als Kultur und Soziologietheoretiker bin ich sehr beeindruckt von den sozialen Einrichtungen des Islâms, insbesondere vom Zakâ, vom Erbrecht, vom Verbot des Geldverleihs mit Zinsen, vom Verbot von aggressiven Kriegen, von der Vorschrift des Haddsch und der Zulassung der Polygamie. Die Gesetze garantieren einen rechten Weg zwischen Kapitalismus und Kommunismus, sie definieren die Grenzen der Streitereien zwischen Staaten, sie geben eine feste Basis für vernünftigen Pazifismus und sie präsentieren eine ausgezeichnete Art, brüderliche Solidarität unter den Muslimen herzustellen, was immer ihre Rasse, Nationalität, Sprache, Kultur oder soziale Klasse sein möge. Sie schaffen eine Basis für die Heirat, welche unwiderlegbar durch biologische und soziale Faktoren bestimmt ist und zuverlässiger ist als die oberflächliche und unaufrichtige Monogamie der westlichen Völker. Zum Schluss meiner Bekenntnisse danke ich Gott für seine Gunst, die er mir erteilt hat, indem er mir den rechten Weg gezeigt hat. „Und ganz gewiss wirst du sie als die gierigsten Menschen nach Leben finden, sogar mehr (noch) als diejenigen, die (Allâh etwas) beigesellen.
