But really, Is the problem unrecorded crimes or is it the inability to deal with the epidemic levels of crime? Police are struggling to cope; there's also a warning in the report that increasing workload pressures among police - who are having to do more with considerably less - will "sharpen" the incentive not to record crimes. Isn't if time we looked at the root cause of these crimes as opposed to whether it was recorded or not? Under democracy the pursuit of happiness and individual freedom is prioritised over what is best for society. So as long as individuals are left to fulfil their desires and exercise their freedoms then it's inevitable they will push the boundaries eventually breaking the law, hence we have so many crimes. We live in a society where people turn a blind eye to crime, not wanting to get involved. The way Islam deals with crime is by looking at society holistically as well as the needs of the individual. The Islamic system moulds the individual through its values and accountability to its creator. So each individual is moulded in such a way that they will carry an 'inner police man' within themselves. Meaning they will correct themselves when they think about doing something wrong ie their Taqwa ( god consciousness). If that fails and the person still considers the crime, then the fear of being accounted by society will put them off, meaning society doesn't turn a blind eye to crime. And finally if that doesn't work then the harsh punishments of Islam will act as a severe deterrent. The reality today is that secular democracy can not prevent crime. That's why the focus is put not on prevention but rather capturing of criminals. Whether it be through CCTV, DNA or getting caught red handed. There is no real deterrent other than the fear of getting caught.
