President Assad Stresses Need for Uniting Efforts of Arab Forces

    Nov 6, 2013

President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday met a delegation from the Algerian National Committee for Supporting the Steadfastness of Syria, which comprises Algerian political, media and academic figures and is chaired by head of the committee Ramadan Boudla'a, SANA reported.

During the meeting, President Assad affirmed that the Algerian people's support for Syria is not unusual for this people, particularly since the Algerian people have had a very similar experience to what the Syrians are experiencing now in confronting terrorism, adding that the Syrian and Algerian people share an honorable history of confronting colonialism.

President Assad said that what is happening in the region affirms the need for uniting the efforts of Arab elite figures and nationalist to create an intellectual deterrent capable of protecting pan-Arabism and nationalism and confronting changes and foreign and takfiri plots targeting Arabs' present and future.

For their part, members of the delegation affirmed that the Algerian people support the steadfastness of the Syrian army and people in the face of terrorism and plots of sedition and division which are backed by regional and international sides, stressing that these projects target all Arabs, not just Syrians.

They also voiced confidence that Syria, the symbol of resistance and the first defender of Arab causes and interests, will be victorious.

Kerry reaffirms: US sees settlements as illegitimate

US Secretary of State John Kerry has reaffirmed Washington's rejection of Israeli settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories as illegitimate.

"We consider now, and have always considered, the settlements to be illegitimate," Kerry said on Wednesday, after talks in Bethlehem with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas focused on shoring up the so-called peace negotiations, AFP reported.

"I want to make it extremely clear that at no time did the Palestinians in any way agree, as a matter of going back to the talks, that they could somehow condone or accept the settlements," Kerry said.

"That is not to say that they weren't aware -- or we weren't aware -- that there would be construction," he added.

His remarks related to a bitter row that has erupted over Israeli illegal moves during the past week to push ahead with construction of more than 3,700 new settler homes.

Several Israeli officials have claimed the settlement announcements were in keeping with tacit "understandings" between the two sides linked to the release last week of 26 veteran Palestinian prisoners.
Their comments sparked furious denials from the Palestinians.

"The Palestinians believe the settlements are illegal. The United Sates continue to believe the settlements are not helpful," Kerry said.
A previous round of direct talks collapsed in September 2010 in an acrimonious row over settlements, with the Palestinians refusing to negotiate while the Israeli regime builds on land they want for a future state.
After six months of shuttle diplomacy, Kerry managed to coax the two sides back to the table in late July.

But already tempers are fraying, once again over Israeli construction on land seized during the 1967 Six Day War.

Saudis Fight a Lost Battle against Change

    Nov 6, 2013 | By Nicola Nasser

The ongoing aggressive Saudi policy for a militarized "regime change" in Syria is more an expression of internal vulnerability, trying hopelessly to avert change outside their borders lest change sweeps inside, than being a positive show of leadership and power, but Syrian developments are proving by the day that the Saudis are fighting a lost battle against change.

Riyadh is fighting several preemptive battles outside its borders in its immediate proximity in a disparate attempt to prevent an historic regional tide of change from changing the country's pre-medieval system of governance and social life.

Surrounded by a turbulent changing regional and international environment, the Saudi Arabian rulers seem worried as hell that their system is facing an historical existential test for the survival of which they are unwisely blundering in foreign policy to alienate friends, win more enemies, exacerbate old animosities and trying counterproductively to promote their unmarketable way of life as the only way they know to survive, instead of reforming to adapt to modern irreversible changes that are sweeping throughout their surroundings and the world like a tsunami of an irresistible fate.

Change is inevitable and if they insist on resisting it they will be shooting themselves in the legs and fighting back a lost battle, which might delay change for a while, but cannot stop it from flooding their outdated feudal type of family governance, where more than seven thousand royal princes spread over the country like a spider's net of rulers who dominate every aspect of the political, administrative, security, military, economic and social life.

True, there is the oil factor underlying the aggressive Saudi regional policies, especially vis-à-vis Iran and Iraq, which is covered up by trumpeting the not so unrealistic threat of sectarian Shiism, Iranian regional hegemony and Iran's nuclear threat lest they endanger the Saudi similar sectarian Wahhabi theology and political prominence in the region where the United States has been the only real hēgemōn since the Saudi family came to power in the Arabian peninsula some one hundred years ago.

For a country where petroleum exports account for some 90 percent of revenue, the prospect of lifting the sanctions imposed by the United States and Europe on Iran and empowering Iraq to carry on with its public plans to increase its oil production to equal or exceed the Saudi level in a few years would bring into oil market very strong competitors who in no time would end the Saudi dominance amid "a continuous decline" in international demand for oil (Billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, news.sky.com, July 29, 2013), dwindling US demand for Saudi oil (read Gal Luft and Anne Korin in foreignaffairs.com on Oct. 15, 2013) and the emergence of China as number one importer of oil in the world last September.

Comparison is noteworthy here; Israel likewise has been trumpeting a hypothetical Iranian threat of a non-existent nuclear military program to cover Israel's own proven nuclear weapons and its real reason for warmongering against Iran, namely to preempt the emergence of a regional competitor in nuclear and defense technology who would compete with Israel's most lucrative industries in the same Asian, African and South American markets.

True also that there is the political factor of the growing Saudi feeling of an American betrayal and that the US security umbrella is no more a source of relief after President Barak Obama declared an end to a decade of war. Quoted by the jewishpress.com on last Oct. 25, Brooking Institution expert Mike Doran, writing in London 's Telegraph about "The Saudi – American Rupture," had this to say: "I know of no analogous period. I've never seen so many disagreements on so many key fronts all at once. And I've never seen such a willingness on the part of the Saudis to publicly express their frustration."

Nonetheless, as proved by the US Secretary of State John Kerry's visit to Riyadh on Monday, after about a century old bilateral strategic ties, the ruling Saudis have no other option but to continue risking their survival on US untrustworthy guarantees for their security and to take the advice of "Ergo" in its Feb. report last year, titled "The Waning Era of Saudi Oil Dominance," that Saudi Arabia "must strive not to alienate the United States," unless they decide to adapt to change internally and change their foreign policy to adapt to the regional changes as well as to the emerging multi-polar world.

In his obvious attempt to contain the Saudi "frustration," "to make certain the Saudi-US relationship is on track" and will remain "strategic" and "enduring," despite the "solid" disagreements, Kerry during his visit to Riyadh went as far as to let down the equality of women as a universal standard enshrined in his country's constitution when he said that "it's up to Saudi Arabia to make its own decision" and that this issue "is best left to the Saudi Arabian people."

    The Real Threat of Ideas

However, it is not only the oil and political factors or the sectarian or military threats that are motivating the aggressive Saudi regional policies, but the preempting of the real threat of the ideas and thoughts of change, regardless of whether they come from a rival conservative (Iran) or moderate (Syria) sect or trend of Islam or from the liberal modernity.

It is true also that the Iranian pronounced "Vilayat-e Faqih" leadership of the Shiites outside Iran threatens to encourage the large Shiite minority sitting on the oil fields in the east of the country, or the Shiite majority in neighboring Bahrain, or the large minority of the Zaidi Houthis in northern Yemen just across the southern border of the kingdom, to follow the example of Hezbullah of their Shiite brethren in southern Lebanon in seeking the military and political support of Iran in their decades long struggle to end social, political and economic marginalization; hence the Saudi military intervention in Bahrain.

But the real threat is much more serious than merely inciting minorities inside or beside the country to rebel and revolt. The underlying main message coming out of Iran transcends sects and minorities.

The cornerstone of the Islamic revolution which late Imam Grand Ayatollah Khomeini led and swept away the more powerful and pro-American hereditary rule of the Shah of Iran was the central idea in his book, "Vilayat-e Faqih" (The Islamic Government: Governance of the Jurist), that there is no hereditary government in Islam.

"Anyone who has some general awareness of the beliefs and ordinances of Islam" would "unhesitatingly give his assent to the principle of the governance of the faqih as soon as he encounters it," the late Iranian leader wrote.

Although it is public knowledge that there is no priesthood in Islam, the "elected" government reports to the "male" faqih who is "elected" from a pool of religious hierarchical elite in a somewhat Islamic copy of the Catholic process of electing the Vatican pope.

The Iranian electoral message is a clear threat to the hereditary "royal" court of the Saudi ruling family to whom a similar religious Wahhabi "priesthood" report instead vice versa like in Iran.

This same elected – versus – hereditary argument explains the Saudi U-turn against the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) whom the Saudi royals had nurtured financially and politically, and still nurturing in Syria , against Pan-Arabism and communism until the end of the last millennium. For ideological reasons, the MB has a very longstanding opposition to hereditary monarchies.

As long as the MB was not in power and targeting only Pan-Arab and left – oriented "republican" Arab ruling regimes and political movements, the Saudis perceived no MB threat, but when the so – called "Arab Spring" brought them to power in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen in alliance with their ruling MB brethren in Turkey, their threat became more realistic than hypothetical, to the extent that Saudis risked public disagreements with both their US and Turkish longstanding allies over their removal from power in Egypt, a Saudi – Egypt disagreement over Syria as well as the Saudi – Turkey war by their respective proxies among the armed gangs who are fighting the Syrian government.

However, the burgeoning liberal pluralistic modernity as is unfolding in the "republics" of Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria as well as in the "monarchies" of Morocco, Jordan and Kuwait represents a more challenging threat to the Saudi hereditary monarchy and the pre-medieval closed society it hopelessly rules to maintain as such for as long as possible.

    Legitimacy Questioned

For this purpose, Saudis succeeded in posturing as the leaders of the counterrevolution fighting both the rival Islamic and the liberal challenges in a lost battle to reverse the irreversible course of history.

Adding to the Saudi vulnerabilities, both challenges are weighing in heavily on the legitimacy of the ruling family whose title to the throne of Saudi Arabia is de facto, not de jure.

Voices that are marginal but loudly heard nonetheless are demanding the Islamic holy places in Mecca and Madina be declared a Vatican – like status free for the Hajj for all Muslim believers because the Saudis have no legitimate title from the Sharia to be their guardians and because they have politicized the Islamic ritual as manifested by banning the Syrians from the Hajj for political reasons.

Resorting to their abundance of petrodollar wealth accumulated from their depleting oil resources could buy mercenaries disguised as Islamic "Jihadists" for the cause of their brand of Islam to confiscate legitimate popular expressions of political and economic grievances in Syria and elsewhere, could bribe their people as well as their Bahraini and Omani brethren out of any integration with the popular protests known as the "Arab Spring" and could abort popular revolts in surrounding Arab countries, but only for a while. Change is inevitable both inside and around the country.

Their only hope for survival ironically lies in following in the footsteps of their bitter foe in Syria , where President Basher al-Assad wisely chose "to lead" the change and reform.

Still better, they could make a U-turn in their regional policy to limit their political isolation in the region by reviving the trilateral axis with Egypt and Syria, which stabilized the region and established a solid basis for a minimum defensive Arab solidarity vis-à-vis Israel since the kingdom joined both countries in their war to liberate their Israeli – occupied lands in 1973; in such a scenario, Iran would be an added value and not "the enemy" as pronounced by Riyadh now.

The alternative is waiting for change to come sooner or later to the Saudi doorsteps; it's a matter of time only.

Nicola Nasser is a veteran Arab journalist based in Birzeit, West Bank of the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. nassernicola@ymail.com

Deadly bombs hit Syria cities after peace talks flop

Bomb attacks in Syria's capital Damascus and the country's south have killed at least 16 people, a day after Moscow and Washington failed to announce a date for proposed peace talks.

In Russia, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Moscow was ready to host informal talks between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government and the opposition, AFP reported.

Russian and US officials on Tuesday failed to agree a date for a proposed peace conference in Geneva that has been delayed multiple times.

On the ground in Syria, at least eight people were killed and 50 wounded in Damascus by a blast in the central Hijaz Square on Wednesday, state news agency SANA reported.

"Eight citizens including two women were killed in an explosion caused by a bomb placed by terrorists at the entrance to the Hijaz railroad company," SANA said.

And in the southern city of Sweida, eight "intelligence officers" were killed on Wednesday in a suicide car bomb that went off by their facility, the anti-government Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed.

"A suicide attacker detonated himself in a car bomb in front of the air force intelligence headquarters in Sweida, killing the intelligence branch chief and seven other officers," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.

The city is a bastion of the Druze minority and is under government control.

SANA also reported the attack, citing a police source who said eight citizens were killed and 41 others injured.

In northern Aleppo province, the monitoring group said Syrian army forces had seized control of most of Tal-Aran town, strategically located on the main road between the city of Aleppo and town of Sfeirah which was recaptured by the army last week.

And in the northern city of Raqqa, the only provincial capital under militant control, the Observatory said ISIL militants had executed a local doctor, accusing him of being a spy for Turkish intelligence.

ISIL militants also decapitated a statue depicting a male and female peasant, known locally as the Statue of Liberty, said the Observatory, which takes its information from activists and doctors on the ground.

The latest upsurge of violence came a day after Washington and Moscow failed to announce a date for proposed Syria peace talks.

UN-Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters in Geneva he was still hopeful the conference could be held before year's end.

The United States and Russia have been pushing for peace talks in Geneva for months, but Brahimi said divisions within the Syrian opposition were an ongoing obstacle to a conference.

Much of Syria's opposition opposes talks with the government and wants Assad's departure to be a condition of any conference, which the Syrian government rejects.

Information Minister Omran al-Zoabi said Monday that the regime will not attend if the aim is for Assad to hand over power.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.

Who heads al-Nusra Front in shadows ?

Before he became head of an al-Qaeda-linked group that is one of the most feared bands of radicals fighting the Syrian government, he was a teacher of classical Arabic who fought American troops in Iraq and quickly rose through the ranks of the global terrorist network.

Little else is known about Abu Mohammad Golani, the man who leads the Nusra Front – including where he is now or even if he is still alive.

"His identity is really a bit of a mystery," said Charles Lister, analyst at IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Center.

Syrian state media said last week that Golani, known as the emir of the Nusra Front, was killed in fighting in a coastal stronghold of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government. But militants deny that, describing the report as propaganda.

Golani is so mysterious that no one can say with certainty what his real name is. Golani is a nom de guerre, indicating he was born in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

A native of Syria, he joined the insurgency after moving to Iraq, regional intelligence officials say.

There, he advanced through Al-Qaeda's ranks and eventually returned to Syria shortly after the Syrian crisis began in March 2011.

Lister, who follows Syria's militant brigades, said he is skeptical about reports of Golani's death. If true, they would have stirred up considerable chatter on terrorist forums and social media platforms, he said.

    Terrorist leaders in Syria agree.

"We haven't seen anything unusual among the ranks of Nusra fighters that suggest their leader has been killed," Islam Alloush, the spokesman for the Army of Islam militant umbrella group, told the Associated Press.

Iraqi, Jordanian and Lebanese security officials describe the 39-year-old Golani as one of al-Qaeda's top leaders.

According to two senior Iraqi military intelligence officials, he was once a teacher of Arabic before moving to Iraq, where he turned to militancy and eventually became a close associate of Abu Musaab Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born leader of the al-Qaeda in Iraq.

After Zarqawi was killed by a US airstrike in 2006, Golani left Iraq, briefly staying in Lebanon, where he offered logistical support for the Jund al-Sham terrorist group, which follows al-Qaeda's extremist ideology, the officials said.

He returned to Iraq to continue fighting but was arrested by the US military and held at Camp Bucca, a sprawling prison on Iraq's southern border with Kuwait. At that camp, where the US military held tens of thousands of suspected militants, he taught classical Arabic to other prisoners, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were revealing information from secret files.

After his release from prison in 2008, Golani resumed his militant work, this time alongside Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the head of al-Qaeda in Iraq – also known as the Islamic State of Iraq. He was soon appointed head of al-Qaeda operations in Mosul province.

Shortly after the Syrian unrest began, Golani moved into Syrian territory and, fully supported by Baghdadi, formed the Nusra Front, which was first announced in January 2012.

A leader of Jordan's ultra-Orthodox and banned Salafi movement said Baghdadi sent Golani and Abu Jleibeen, a senior al-Qaeda operative who has a relationship by marriage to Zarqawi, to fight in Syria, where Golani was named "general emir" of Nusra and Abu Jleibeen an emir of the southern Deraa province, birthplace of the Syrian uprising. He spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing police retribution.

Under Golani's leadership, Nusra has grown into one of the most powerful terrorist groups, with an estimated force of 6,000 to 7,000 militants across Syria.

The US State Department, which placed Nusra on its list of terrorist groups in December 2012, said it had claimed nearly 600 attacks, including suicide attacks, small-arms operations and bombings in major cities.

"Through these attacks, Nusra has sought to portray itself as part of the legitimate Syrian opposition while it is, in fact, an attempt by al-Qaeda in Iraq to hijack the struggles of the Syrian people for its own malign purposes," the department said.

Golani gained prominence in April, when he rejected an attempted takeover of Nusra by Baghdadi, revealing a widening rift within al-Qaeda's global network. Golani distanced himself from claims that the two groups had merged into a group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), as announced by Baghdadi.

Instead, he pledged allegiance directly to al-Qaeda's leader, Ayman Zawahri, who was said to be against Baghdadi's bid to merge both groups, and said his group would continue to use the Nusra Front as its name.

In a recording, the soft-spoken man vowed that allegiance to Zawahri would not change the group's behavior inside Syria.

"We say to our people in Syria that Nusra Front will continue to defend your religion, your dignity and blood and will not change its behavior toward you or other fighter groups," he said.

Golani himself was listed by the State Department as a "specially designated global terrorist" in May.

In another recording, he said his ultimate goal was the overthrow of Assad and the institution of Shariah throughout the country.

Despite some friction with members of the so-called Free Syrian Army militant umbrella group, the two sides often work together against the government troops in rebel-held areas. The ISIS and Nusra, which are largely made up of foreign militants, have been criticized for their brutality and for trying to impose a strict version of extremist ideology in areas under their control.

Rebels acknowledge knowing close to nothing about Golani. The Nusra Front, like al-Qaeda in Iraq, obscures the real identity of its senior leaders.

A Jordanian security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said only the top echelon in al-Qaeda know Golani's real name, but he's commonly known to them as "Al-Sheikh Al-Fateh," the Conqueror Sheikh.

An Internet search for Golani's picture turns up just one, an image of a young, bearded man in black fatigues.

"It's difficult to know anything," Alloush said. "He doesn't come out in the open."

Before he became head of an al-Qaeda-linked group that is one of the most feared bands of radicals fighting the Syrian government, he was a teacher of classical Arabic who fought American troops in Iraq and quickly rose through the ranks of the global terrorist network.

Assad advisor: Syrian crisis may be over in 2 weeks

There's a chance to end the Syrian crisis in two weeks if there's political will on all sides, says Bouthaina Shaaban, the political and media advisor to the Syrian president.

"If the various parties have the political will to put an end to the Syrian suffering, to the Syrian crisis, they can do it within weeks. If they can only stop financing the arming [of Syrian rebels] and the smuggling of terrorists across the border from Turkey, 50 percent of the Syrian crisis would be over in two weeks' time," Shaaban said in an interview with Russia Today.

She said that the Syrian government was ready to take part in Geneva-2 peace talks without any preconditions. President Bashar Assad's government is ready to sit down for peace talks with "people who represent the political opposition" of the Syrian population, but not the armed rebel groups, Shaaban said.

For example, the coalition represented by Saudi Arabia "has nothing to do with the Syrian people," she said.

"We would like to know, 'Who do these people represent on the ground?' Do they represent the [Al-] Nusra Front or Al-Qaeda? They do not represent the Syrian people."

Although many groups on the ground have refused to be part of the Syrian opposition's national coalition, the main political parties are calling for Assad to step down as a precondition for the talks.

After a day of talks on Tuesday with representatives from the US, Russia, the permanent members of the UN Security Council, the UN and Arab League special envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi said the sides have not managed to agree on a date for the Geneva 2 peace conference. He added that the next meeting was scheduled for November 25.

Shaaban also urged US Secretary of State John Kerry to be more constructive, "not to change his narrative" and to "take the same stance" every time he speaks about the Syrian crisis.

"The US Secretary of State should honor his words … and take the same stance everywhere he goes, so the people would understand what [the US stance is]."

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million others displaced due to the violence.

    Chronik-Fotos

O #Allah , You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship but You. You created me and I am Your slave. I keep Your covenant, and my pledge to You so far as i am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I admit to Your blessings upon me, and I admit to my misdeeds. Forgive me, For there is none who may forgive sins but You.

The Prophet Muhammad :saw: said "If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it and dies before the morning he will be from the people of Paradise."
