Assad resignation issue not on Geneva agenda: Deputy FM
There will be no discussion concerning President Bashar al-Assad's resignation at Geneva conference, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Meqdad said on Monday.
"Surely we will not speak about the resignation of Bashar Assad. We do not have such topic on the agenda, and never have, so take time to explain this to everyone who dreams about him resigning, that they are simply wasting our time.
"Such discussions are intolerable," Meqdad said.
The first round of the Geneva-2 international conference on the Syrian peaceful settlement, which lasted more than a week, ended late January.
According to the UN and LAS special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, negotiations between the representatives of the authorities and the opposition "had a tough start, and have made slow progress. "In essence, the delegations could not agree on any item.
Representatives of Damascus are unhappy with the composition of the opposition delegation and insist on a broader presence of opponents of Bashar al-Assad.
Today's meeting will set the meetings' schedule for the next few days.
Earlier the Syrian opposition hopes that Russia would convince Assad to resign, spokesperson to the National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces (NCORF) Louay Safi told a news briefing.
"We strongly hope that Russia will convince the Syrian regime's head to resign. This will be the safest decision for the future of Syria," Safi claimed.
"Moscow is the only party, which has influence upon the government. Russia prevented any decision by the international community," the NCORF spokesperson added.

Homs evacuation operation extended till Wednesday: UN
The United Nations has said an operation to allow civilians to leave besieged districts of the Syrian city of Homs will be extended until Wednesday night.
The announcement on Monday was welcomed by UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos, and follows a successful but difficult three-day operation to allow civilians to leave Homs, with gunfire and attacks frustrating progress.
Three hundred people were evacuated Monday from the besieged districts of Syria's Homs in the fourth day of a humanitarian operation, the Syrian Red Crescent said via Twitter.
"Group of around 300 people have been evacuated just now from old city Homs," said the humanitarian organization.
The latest evacuations bring the total number of civilians given safe passage out of the war-ravaged central part of the city up to some 1,000 since Friday.
Militant groups' neighborhoods in Homs, Syria's third largest city, have been under a tight army blockade for more than 18 months, and some 3,000 people had been living on little more than olives and herbs.
According to the Syrian Red Crescent, 300 people left Monday, "most of them... women and children."
No truce violations were reported Monday, though 14 people, including at least three militants, were killed in clashes on the besieged neighborhoods on previous days.

Syria opposition at odds with wider parties: Russia
Russia has expressed its disappointment with the line-up of the Syrian opposition's delegation which has remained unchanged since the first round of peace talks wrapped up in Geneva on January 31.
The Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Office, Alexei Borodavkin, noted on Monday that both the Geneva communique and the US-Russia statement of 7 May 2013 stipulated that the Syrian opposition delegation must be represented at the peace talks by a wider range of liberal opposition forces.
He said the opposition obviously failed to meet this requirement by bringing in people from only a handful of the National Coalition's groups and parties. "It is a real shame," the ambassador added.
UN Arab League special envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi also demanded that the rival delegations show more commitment to a peaceful solution, he was quoted on Monday.
Brahimi is expected to spend the next two to three days shuttling between the two delegations who still won't talk directly to each other.
He plans to keep the two meetings separated and move between two rooms for now in hopes of improving the atmosphere during the second round of peace talks, which began Monday.
Russian and American deputy foreign chiefs are to meet in Switzerland this week where they are expected to discuss Syria progress with the help of Brahimi.
"Russia will be represented by Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov. The US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman is also expected to arrive in Switzerland before long. She will speak on hehalf of the American delegation," the source informed.

Extremists from New Zealand fighting in Syria: PM
New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key has said there are New Zealanders fighting alongside with anti-government militants in Syria while others have been blocked from going there by having their passports cancelled under national security provisions.
Key refused to provide details on those involved, but confirmed there was a small number of New Zealanders involved with anti-government groups in Syria, New Zealand Herald reported on Monday.
He would not say whether some were linked to al-Qaeda groups, but Australia's Federal Police have told media that up to 100 Australians were understood to be fighting in Syria, and about six had been killed "while fighting with al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups''.
Key said that since 2005, the law had provided for the Minister of Internal Affairs to cancel a passport in some circumstances.
"So we have the capacity to cancel a passport if we believe somebody is going into a war zone, for instance, to fight in a way we don't think is a sensible step for them to take.'' He said it was also possible to cancel a passport on national security grounds after somebody had left the country.
As a result, they would have to stay where they were or be deported to New Zealand. He said fewer than 10 passports had been cancelled since that law passed in 2005, some of which related to Syria.
Australia has also cancelled passports of those involved in the fighting and has warned they will be treated as national security threats upon their return.
Key said the current powers were sufficient to deal with matters when those people returned to New Zealand, and each case would be different. "But there is always a risk that somebody who goes into that environment comes back to New Zealand in a radicalized state.''
"We believe we have enough powers to deal with the situation. Australia's numbers are much greater and they've taken a different perspective on it.''
He said it showed the importance of giving intelligence agencies the powers they had. "From time to time we need to track the activities of New Zealanders, we need to be sure of their whereabouts and we certainly need to be clear that if they return to New Zealand, whether they pose a threat to other New Zealanders if they have become radicalized.''
A recent British defense study showed that about 100,000 militants, fragmented into 1,000 groups, are fighting in Syria against the government and people.

ISIL Issues Banknotes in Western Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) terrorist group released some banknotes in the restive al-Anbar province, Western Iraq, with the image of al-Qaeda's killed leader Osama Bin Laden on its front.
The note which is called the 'ISIL dinar' also bears the signatures of the terrorist group's ringleader and finance minister without naming them.
Leader of the Anbar Salvation Council Sheikh Ahmed Abu Risha provided a photo of the notes published in Anbar province to the media.
He described the notes as evidence of the presence of the terrorist ISIL members in Anbar province, and underlined the necessity of cooperation between Iraq's police force and the tribes residing in the Western province to uproot terrorism and establish security in the region.
Anbar province has been the scene of fierce clashes that flared up after Iraqi police dispersed an anti-government protest site outside Ramadi in late December last year.
In January, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki urged the people of Anbar to continue fighting al-Qaeda militant group, and called for the world to support the "war against terrorism."
"We call on the sons of the tribes in Fallujah, Saqlawiyah in Anbar province and in Nineveh province to take a firm stance in order to expel the terrorists from their areas so that peace would prevail there," Maliki said in a weekly televised speech.
Iraq is witnessing its worst violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, a total of 8,868 Iraqis, including 7,818 civilians and civilian police personnel, were killed in 2013, which is the highest annual death toll in years.

"Seit einigen Tagen kursiert im Internet schockierendes Videomaterial über einen palästinensischen Männerchor, der mit einem Klavier bewaffnet den Widerstand gegen die legitime Orchesterleitung des syrischen Dirigenten Assad besingt. Was von AutorInnen aus dem Umfeld der Initiative „adopt a revolution" in einem Beitrag als vermeintlich zivilgesellschaftlicher Protestsong mit dem Inhalt "Kommt zurück, ihr Vertriebenen, eure Reise dauert schon zu lang" präsentiert wird, entpuppt sich wieder einmal als vollkommen einsaitige Dis-Intonation und dient nur dazu, eine Improvisation der NATO vorzubereiten:
Die Aufnahmen, die vermutlich zuerst über das Internetportal „Pianoleaks" veröffentlicht worden sind, konnten bisher noch nicht von unabhängigen Musikwissenschaftlern als echt bestätigt werden. Zwar dürfen internationale Cembaloexperten keinerlei Aussagen über die Urheberrechte der zum Einsatz gekommenen Noten treffen. Sollten sich diese Bilder jedoch als authentisch herausstellen, wären sie ein eindeutiger Beleg dafür, dass der Westen syrischen Rebellen völkerrechtswidrig Gesangsunterricht gibt."
