    Der abgebrannte Souk von Aleppo, der bombardierte Baal-Tempel in Palmyra – das sind schmerzliche Verluste, doch zumindest können solche Monumente restauriert werden. Anders verhält es sich mit den Raubgrabungen, die archäologische Strukturen oft endgültig zerstören.

    Wer rätselt, was es mit so viel nationalkultureller Euphorie inmitten eines blutigen Krieges auf sich hat, dem empfiehlt sich ein Blick in den Kalender: Am 3. Juni stehen in Syrien Präsidentschaftswahlen an. Ein publikumsträchtiger Rückgriff auf den Kulturschatz des Landes nimmt sich da umso besser aus, als das Regime vom ersten Tag der Revolte an die Karte der Heimatliebe ausspielte. (...) Unterdessen wird in Gebieten, in denen oder in deren Nähe die Armee stationiert ist, im grossem Stil geplündert. Dass dies möglich ist, rückt die kulturpolitischen Exerzitien der Machthaber in ein noch fragwürdigeres Licht. (...) Umso mehr erschüttert Müller-Karpe, dass allen voran der Westen diesen Ausverkauf der kulturgeschichtlichen Erkenntnis finanziert. Schliesslich sässen die Abnehmer für den illegalen Antikenhandel in London, München oder New York.
