    Since when did the UNSC support anyone but the Assads?
     
    23-05-2014: Russia and China's veto'ing on Thursday of a draft UN resolution calling for the crisis in Syria' to be referred to the International Criminal Court surprised precisely nobody in Syria.

    Even as the predictable vote took place, Assad's air force, rightly confident of no international censure, launched two more chemical weapons strikes on civilians in just one region of Syria, along with the regime's also-customary daily carpet-bombing with cluster bombs, TNT-filled barrel bombs, white phosphorous, ballistic and surface to surface missiles; Syrians are fully aware, and have been for some years, that the UNSC and the world's 'pacifists' view Syria's population in the same light as Assad and his more overt allies - i.e. as expendable "collateral damage."
     
    This is the same UNSC, after all, that was formed largely to legitimise and rubber-stamp another Nakba 66 years ago and has done so ever since. This is the same UNSC that cooperatively looked away, coughing politely, as Hafez Assad's forces slaughtered between 30,000 and 50,000 civilian men, women and children in Hama in 1982, also using the obscene lie of "fighting an Islamist insurgency": disregarding his son doing the same thing on a national scale is, therefore, no biggie for the five veto-wielding UNSC permeanent members or indeed George Galloway, 'Stop the War' and co, all of whom have always dismissed Syrians' and Syrian-Palestinians' lives as disposable so long as this slaughter serves the Assad regime's interests.
     
    Heck, the slaughter of Syrian children is the material of side-splitting merriment even (or perhaps especially) for Western 'liberals', with droll American comedian Bill Maher cracking a hilarious gag re Syria just after the regime's slaughter by chemical weapons of over 1,700 men, women and children in East Ghouta in August 2013 about the similarity between ballistic missile bombardment and eating Monsanto foods; we'd like to cordially invite Mr Maher to visit Aleppo or maybe Idlib with his family for their summer holiday so he can have the opportunity to accurately compare the two up close - Bashar certainly has plenty of Scuds and loves to use them on civilian areas – and if any of Bill's family survive the missile bombardment we're sure the experience will provide material for several hysterically funny Saturday Night Live routines about the similarity between a Big Mac and seeing children be blown to bits. Oddly, while we looked for similar side-splitters from Mr. Maher about 9/11 in the weeks after it took place in 2011, we couldn't find any…but silly us, those were important American people's lives, not those of expendable Syrian kids.
     
    As some grotesquely offensive attempt at 'compensation' for Thursday's UNSC veto, Ban Ki-moon also announced the same day that the UN is poised to help in getting long-awaited humanitarian aid across borders into Syria, even at crossings outside regime control, as though this made up for the UN's abandoning the Syrian people to be bombed and gassed and continuing to work hand-in-glove with the regime in every other area. Amazingly enough, however, it doesn't. The people of Syria know full well that the UN and the world are absolutely determined that Assad should stay. But the UNSC and the world that watches Assad's Nakba in complicit silence don't seem to realise that after Assad has taken everything the people of Syria had, destroying the nation and leaving no family untouched by grief and heartbreak, Syrians quite literally have nothing left to lose by continuing the fight for freedom for as long as it takes. — mit Kyazze Obed.
