Einer der Männer durfte jeden Nachmittag eine Stunde auf seinem Bett sitzen, damit die Flüssigkeit aus seinen Lungen abfließen konnte. Sein Bett war neben dem einzigen Fenster in dem Raum. Der andere Mann musste die ganze Zeit flach auf seinem Rücken liegen. Die beiden Männer sprachen stundenlang miteinander. Sie sprachen über ihre Frauen und Familien, über ihre Häuser, ihre Jobs, ihren Dienst beim Militär und wo sie im Urlaub waren… Jeden Nachmittag, als der Mann welcher am Fenster lag, sitzen durfte, verbrachte er diese Zeit indem er seinen Zimmergenossen all die Dinge beschrieb, welche er aus dem Fenster sah. Der Mann auf dem anderen Bett, lebte in dieser einen Stunde völlig auf und sein Leben wurde erhellt und erfreut aufgrund den Aktivitäten und Farben, welche ihm beschrieben wurde aus der Welt außerhalb des Zimmers. Aus dem Fenster sah man einen Park und ein wunderschönen See. Enten und Schwäne spielten auf dem Wasser, während Kinder mit ihren Modellbooten auf dem Wasser spielten. Pärchen liefen Hand an Hand zwischen Blumen und jede Farbe war zu sehen, eine schöne Aussicht auf die Skyline der Stadt konnte auch aus der Distanz gesehen werden. Der Mann am Fenster beschrieb alles im kleinsten Detail, der Mann auf der anderen Seite des Zimmers, schloss seine Augen und stellte sich diese Szenen bildlich vor. Eines warmen Nachmittags, beschrieb der Mann am Fenster eine Parade welche vorbeilief. Auch wenn der andere Mann die Musikband nicht hören konnte, konnte er sie sich gedanklich vorstellen, da der Mann am Fenster es in anschaulichen Worten beschrieb. Tage, Wochen und Monate vergingen. Eines Morgens kam die Krankenschwester um Wasser für das Bad vorzubereiten, jedoch fand sie einen leblosen Körper. Der Mann am Fenster starb friedlich im Schlaf. Sie war zutiefst betrübt und rief das Krankenhauspersonal um den Körper weg zu transportieren. Sobald der Zeitpunkt passend war, fragte der andere Mann, ob er doch bitte an das Fenster gebracht werden könnte. Die Krankenschwester war erfreut darüber, etwas zu ändern und ging sicher, dass der Patient komfortabel war. Sie ließ ihn daraufhin alleine. Langsam, schmerzerfüllt versucht er sich auf einem Ellenbogen aufzustützen um seinen ersten auf die Welt außerhalb zu werfen. Er drehte sich langsam Richtung Fenster um seinen Blick zu wagen. Er sah eine leere Wand. Der Mann fragte die Krankenschwester, was den anderen Mann dazu gebracht hatte solch wundervolle Dinge von außerhalb des Fensters zu beschreiben! Die Krankenschwester erwiderte, dass der Mann komplett blind war und nicht einmal die Wand sehen konnte. Sie sagte: Vielleicht wollte er sie aufmuntern." Nachwort: Es ist ein enormes Glücksgefühl, andere glücklich zu machen, trotz unserer eigenen Situation. Geteiltes Leid ist halbes Leid, aber Glück wenn es geteilt wird, ist doppeltes Glück.
