Almost half of the armed groups forces fighting against the Syrian government are hardliners or extremists with al-Qaeda links, according to a new study due to be published this week.
Split into around 1,000 fragmented cells, the Syrian opposition consists of at least 10,000 fighters who are extremists with strong links to al-Qaeda, while another 35,000 are hardliners, according to analysis by defense consultancy IHS Jane's.
The difference between extremists and hardliners, the Telegraph reports is that the latter concentrates only on the Syria, while extremists groups have a global outreach. A further 30,000 opposition fighters belong to more moderate groups that have a so-called Islamic character.
The study, based interviews with militants and on intelligence estimates, concludes that around 100,000 militants are involved with the opposition forces.
"The insurgency is now dominated by groups which have at least an extremist viewpoint on the conflict," Charles Lister, author of the analysis told the Telegraph. "The idea that it is mostly secular groups leading the opposition is just not borne out."
Al-Nusra Front and the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) are two dominant groups that have al-Qaeda links and are gaining momentum on the ground.
"Because of the extremist make up of such a large proportion of the opposition, the fear is that if the West doesn't play its cards right, it will end up pushing these people away from the people we are backing," Lister said.
The issue of Western support to the opposition has long raised questions over the fears arms might fall into terrorist hands.
ISIS has also begun a program of "indoctrination" of civilians in armed groups-held areas, trying to educate Syria's traditionally moderate Sunni Muslims into a more hardline view.
In early September, the group distributed black backpacks with the words "Islamic State of Iraq" stamped on them. They also now control schools in Aleppo.
"It seems it is some sort of a long-term plan to brainwash the children and recruit potential fighters," said Elie Wehbe, a Lebanese journalists who is conducting research into these activities.
As if trying to help the West separate hardcore militants from moderate opposition, al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri addressed his brothers on Sunday, calling on them to avoid allying with other rebel fighters backed by Gulf Arab states and the West.
"I warn my brothers and people in the Syria of unity and jihad against coming close to any of these groups," Zawahri said.
Meanwhile, in the past two weeks the US has reportedly begun delivering arms to militants battling the Syrian government.
The CIA has been entrusted to monitor the delivery of arms to insure that it does not end up in the hands of al-Qaeda associates.
The agency controls and tracks the delivery of reportedly light weapons and other munitions via countries bordering Syria, such as Turkey and Jordan.

Panel probing 14 suspected Syria chemical attacks
GENEVA: A U.N. war crimes panel is investigating 14 suspected chemical attacks in Syria, its chairman said Monday, dramatically escalating the stakes after diplomatic breakthroughs that saw the Syrian government agree to dismantle its chemical weapons program.
Paulo Sergio Pinheiro said the Geneva-based U.N. panel he heads has not pinpointed the chemical used in the attacks and is awaiting evidence from a separate team of U.N. chemical weapons inspectors expected to be made public later Monday.
That report is expected to add momentum to a deal to eradicate Syria's chemical weapons program.
Pinheiro also said the panel believes Syrian President Bashar Assad's government has been responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity, while rebel groups have perpetrated war crimes but not crimes against humanity "because there is not a clear chain of command."
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry ended a weeklong diplomacy tour in Paris on Monday. Just a week ago he was here lobbying for global support for military strikes against Assad, but after a breakthrough with Russia, Kerry's latest visit was intended to secure support from allies for the deal to secure and then eradicate Syria's chemical weapons arsenal.
Kerry and his French and British counterparts laid out a two-pronged approach in Syria, calling for enforceable U.N. benchmarks for eradicating the chemical weapons program and an international conference bolstering the moderate opposition.
France and the U.S. insisted that a military response to the Aug. 21 poison gas attack that killed hundreds remained on the table, and were pressing for a U.N. resolution reflecting that in coming days.
"If Assad fails to comply ... we are all agreed, and that includes Russia, that there will be consequences," Secretary of State John Kerry said.
Meanwhile, invitations were going out Monday to top members of the Syrian National Coalition - the main umbrella opposition group - for an international conference in New York timed to coincide with next week's U.N. General Assembly meeting, French officials said.
Bolstering the Western-backed SNC is just as crucial to Syria's future as Assad's agreement to give up chemical arms, said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.
"He must understand that there is no military victory, no possible military victory for him," Fabius said. He acknowledged that broad popular support for the rebels has been hampered by fears that Islamic militants are now playing a major role in the 2 ½-year-old uprising.
In briefing the allies, Kerry was pressing for support for the ambitious agreement that averted threatened U.S. military strikes. It calls for an inventory of Syria's chemical weapons program within one week, with all components of the program out of the country or destroyed by mid-2014.
Those who blame Assad for the chemical attack and supported military strikes say it is up to Assad to uphold his end of any deal.
"It is extremely important that there are no evasions, that there is no cat and mouse game going on over these weapons," said British Foreign Secretary William Hague.
Kerry acknowledged the chemical arms deal would have little immediate effect on the bloodshed in Syria, which has killed more than 100,000 people, but he said full compliance was a key first step.
In Geneva, Pinheiro said the "vast majority" of casualties in Syria's civil war came from conventional weapons like guns and mortars.
The Aug. 21 chemical attack unfolded as a U.N. chemical weapons team was in Syria to investigate earlier reported attacks. After days of delays, the inspectors were allowed access to victims, doctors and others in the Damascus suburbs afflicted by the poison gas. The U.N.'s chief weapons inspector turned over his team's report on Sunday, and the Security Council is due to take it up in a closed session Monday.
The Assad regime insists that the attack was carried out by rebels. The inspection team led by Swedish expert Ake Sellstrom was mandated to report on whether chemical weapons were used and which ones they were, but not on who was responsible

Several killed, wounded at Washington Navy Yard shooting
WASHINGTON: Several people were killed and others wounded when at least one gunman opened fire at the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington D.C. on Monday, authorities said.
One Navy official said that four people had died and eight others were injured, but other officials suggested caution over those numbers saying the situation was in flux.
A Washington police spokesman said five people had been shot at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, just 2.6 miles from the White House, including a District of Columbia police officer and one other law enforcement officer.
"There was three gunshots straight in a row," said Patricia Ward, who works at the Navy Yard, describing how she first heard the gunfire while having breakfast at the headquarters building.
A few seconds later, Ward said she heard four more gunshots. Security guards rushed in and got people out as fast as they could - "'Run, run, run,'they told people," Ward told reporters.
NBC News, citing a senior naval officer at the Navy Yard, said at least 12 people had been shot, with four killed and eight wounded. The report could not be independently confirmed.
A Navy official, who asked not to be identified, said several people were dead and several others were injured.
Another Navy official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said more than one gunman may have been involved. The Washington Post reported that there were several gunmen.
The Navy said in a statement the shooting took place at the heavily guarded headquarters, where about 3,000 people work.
The shooting hit the military establishment less than three week after U.S. Army psychiatrist Major Nidal Hasan was sentenced to death for murdering 13 people in 2009 at Fort Hood, Texas, where he gunned down unarmed soldiers in what he later called retaliation for U.S. wars in Muslim countries.
A Washington police spokesman said the first reports of shots were received at 8:36 a.m. EDT (1236 GMT).
The White House urged citizens to follow instructions from autorities and first responders and said Predident Barack Obama had been briefed.
"The President has been briefed several times about the unfolding situation," a spokesman said. "The President directed his team to stay in touch with our federal partners, including the Navy and FBI, as well as the local officials."
Dozens of police and emergency vehicles surrounded the complex in southeast Washington, which is about a mile (1.6 km) south of the U.S. Capitol, local media reported.
Helicopters circled the headquarters with some touching down on the building's roof, according to a live feed by Washington's WJLA TV. The shooting briefly shut down flights at Reagan National Airport.
The Navy Yard dates to the 18th century and is the oldest Navy installation. It houses a museum, the residence of the chief of naval operations and is responsible for weapons development, among other functions.

Jeder Muslim der versucht nach den Rechtssprüchen des Islam zu leben, wird als Fundamentalist oder Terrorist gebrandmarkt, während die Kreuzzügler sich als die Botschafter des Friedens ausgeben. Die Realität zeigt aber, dass gerade sie die eigentlichen Terroristen sind, die fanatisiert ihr gesamtes Waffenarsenal einsetzen, um Hunderttausende von unschuldigen Muslimen im Irak, in Palästina oder in Kaschmir und der übrigen muslimischen Welt zu massakrieren, um ihre egoistischen Ziele durchzusetzen.
Allah (s.w.t.) beschreibt sie im Qur'an folgendermaßen: "Und wenn ihnen gesagt wird: 'Stiftet kein Unheil auf der Erde', so sagen sie: 'Wir sind doch die, die Gutes tun.' Gewiss jedoch sind sie die, die Unheil stiften, aber sie empfinden es nicht."
(Sura 2, Ayat 11-12)

Leid, Not und Tod erfasst die gesamte Ummah aus allen erdenklichen Richtungen. Sie sind zum Spielball der Kuffar geworden, doch liegt der Fokus der Muslime einzig und allein auf der Thematik des Bartes oder der Kleidungsvorschrift. Dabei reichen doch allein die täglichen, unheilvollen Nachrichten aus der islamischen Welt – und erst recht die Gräueltaten der vergangenen Jahrzehnte -, um das Blut eines vernünftigen Muslims in seinen Adern zum Kochen zu bringen.
So lastet die Verantwortung auf unseren Schultern, die Ehre und Würde unserer Geschwister wiederherzustellen und dafür zu arbeiten, dass sie in den Tag blicken können, ohne sich Sorgen machen zu müssen, dass sie jeden Moment unter Raketenbeschuss geraten könnten.
Ibn Umar (r) überliefert, dass der Gesandte Allahs (s) sagte: "Ein Muslim ist der Bruder jedes Muslims: Er soll ihn nicht unterdrücken und ihn nicht seinem Feind ausliefern. Wer seinem Bruder hilft, dem wird Allah helfen. Und wer einem Muslim bei der Beseitigung seiner Sorgen hilft, dem wird Allah bei seinen Sorgen am Tage des Gerichts helfen. Ebenso wird Allah demjenigen, der die Schwächen eines anderen Muslims verdeckt, am Tag des Gerichts seine Fehler verbergen."
(Al-Bukhari und Muslim)
Auch sagte der Prophet (s.a.w.): "Der Muslim ist der Bruder des anderen: Weder behandelt er ihn schlecht, noch lässt er ihn im Stich noch demütigt er ihn."
(At-Tirmidhi)
Und Anas (r.) überlieferte, dass der Gesandte Allahs (s.a.w.) sagte: "Keiner von euch ist gläubig, bis er für seinen Bruder wünscht, was er für sich selbst wünscht."
(Al-Bukhari und Muslim)
Doch dieses Vorhaben ist ohne einen islamischen Staat nicht möglich. Und so liegt es an uns, der Mutter aller Pflichten nachzukommen und mit Allahs Erlaubnis das Kalifat zu errichten. Sodann wird Gerechtigkeit in die Welt zurückkehren, und die ungläubigen Ideen und Systeme werden ihre letzten Tage erleben.
