West Virginia official says residents are breathing cancer-causing agent after chemical spill
A West Virginia state official told legislators on Wednesday that he "can guarantee" some residents are breathing in a cancer-causing substance due to the chemical spill that occurred earlier in January.
In a recent meeting with a state legislative committee on water resources, Scott Simonton of the West Virginia Environmental Quality Board said that his tests have detected formaldehyde in water samples contaminated by the recent Elk River chemical spill.
"I can guarantee that citizens in this valley are, at least in some instances, breathing formaldehyde," Simonton said, according to the Associated Press. "They're taking a hot shower. This stuff is breaking down into formaldehyde in the shower or in the water system, and they're inhaling it."
As Simonton noted, the chemical mixture that leaked into the Kanawha Valley's water supply – a combination of seven substances used to wash coal that's called "Crude MCHM" – is partly composed of methanol. When this chemical breaks down, it turns into formaldehyde, a carcinogen linked to diseases such as respiratory cancer.
"It's frightening, it really is frightening," the Charleston Gazette quoted Simonton telling state lawmakers. "What we know scares us, and we know there's a lot more we don't know."
The news also comes just a few days after it was revealed that a second, previously undisclosed chemical known as PPH also leaked into the Kanawha Valley's water supply.
Despite the fact that state officials lifted local "do not use" orders on January 18, Simonton added that the potential presence of other chemicals means it's too soon to declare the water supply safe.
"We know that (crude MCHM) turns into other things, and these other things are bad," Simonton told reporters Wednesday. "And we haven't been looking for those other things. So we can't say the water is safe yet. We just absolutely cannot."
As RT reported previously, the safety standards set by the Centers for Disease Control are based off of a pure form of MCHM, not the multi-chemical cocktail that is Crude MCHM. As a result, the tests declaring West Virginia's water safe may not properly account for the other chemicals in the mixture.
In the week after the "do not use" orders were lifted, hospital admissions related to the chemical spill doubled, as did calls to West Virginia's Poison Control Center.
About 300,000 West Virginians across nine counties were affected by the January 9 spill, which dumped about 10,000 gallons of chemicals into the Elk River. The company responsible for maintaining the storage tanks, Freedom Industries, has been hit with at least 20 lawsuits related to the spill and has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Bethlehem signs petition against Israeli wall
The Bethlehem governorate has filed a petition against the Israeli regime's plan to build a wall that will isolate two Palestinian villages, Press TV reports.
The governorate filed the petition in the Israeli high court against the plan that would separate the two villages of Battir and Cremisan in the occupied West Bank.
Tel Aviv claims the barrier is imperative for security reasons, but Palestinians say it is part of the regime's expansionist measures.
Battir, which has been proposed as a UNESCO world heritage site, is famous for a Roman-era terraced irrigation system that the locals say would be destroyed by the wall.
"They are going to destroy these terraces," said Battir mayor Akram Bader, adding that the wall would be extended six kilometer into the village.
Villagers in Cremisan have been also staging protests on a weekly basis, slamming the plan for the illegal construction of the wall.
"This movement significantly affects the Palestinian side for so many reasons. The first is that they (Israelis) will take the lands and cut the entire area into sections. They will further destroy the historical remains which existed from the Roman era," said Palestinian media analyst Fayez Abbas.
The presence and continued expansion of Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine has created a major obstacle for the efforts made to establish peace in the Middle East.
More than half a million Israelis live in over 120 illegal settlements built since Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem) in 1967.
The United Nations and most countries regard the Israeli settlements as illegal because the territories were captured by Israel in a war in 1967 and are hence subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbid construction on occupied lands.

Iran denies secret talks with Syrian sides in Bern
Iran has dismissed media reports that it has held a round of clandestine talks with rival Syrian sides in Switzerland.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian dismissed the claim made by foreign media on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Al Jazeera said a round of secret talks was being held between representatives from Iran, the Syrian government and the opposition in the Swiss capital, Bern.
On January 22, the Geneva II conference on Syria, which is aimed at finding a political solution to the crisis in the country, kicked off in the Swiss town of Montreux and resumed after a one-day break in Geneva.
On January 19, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Tehran had been invited to the Geneva II conference, but later retracted the invitation under pressure from the United States, Saudi Arabia and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition.
UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi on Wednesday acknowledged a "quite large" gap between rival sides in the conference, and that he did not expect the talks to achieve anything substantive.
The opposition and its Western supporters, including the US, insist that President Bashar al-Assad must step down and a transitional government be formed in Syria, but Damascus has rejected the demand, arguing that the foreign-backed coalition does not represent the Syrian opposition.
Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since March 2011. According to figures released by the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have so far been killed and millions displaced due to the violence.

Wer diese Worte nicht liest, verpasst etwas!
Geschwister im Islam und Hallo an alle Nicht-Muslime,
Ich bitte jeden nochmal um das Forum aufrecht zu erhalten, und um unnötige Diskussionen sowie sich von der Unwissenheit zu distanzieren, sich als Erinnerung 2 Threads durchzulesen:
Fragen und Antworten im Islam
Quellenangaben!
Jeder der hier regestriert ist, möchte mehr über die Wunderschöne Religion, den Islam lernen, und um Authentisches Wissen zu erlangen, und sich von der Unwissenheit und dem viel Fragen usw zu distanzieren. Ich bitte uns alle immer 2 mal zu überlegen, bevor wir den Button Antworten drücken.
Jeder verpflichtet sich für seinen eigenen Beitrag, die Verantwortung zu tragen und wenn wir weiter über den Islam, Allaah und Muhammad im Guten lernen wollen und nach Wissen streben wollen, sollten wir eben solche kleinen Dinge, die ein großes Ausmaß haben, mit bedacht, beachten!
Allaah azza wa jall kennt die Absicht, hinter jedem, der einen Beitrag verfasst, und kennt auch dass Wissen, von wo sich der Diener sich dieses aneignet. Allaah kennt alles Verborgene und Offenbare... Betrügen wir uns nicht selber und fangen wir an diese Religion ernst zu nehmen und mit jeder noch so kleinste Frage mit bedacht zu beantworten! Der Islam ist keine Religion für einen Tag in der Woche, noch für 1 Jahr noch für 2 Jahre sondern er ist bis zum letzten Atemzug und mehr! Und wir leben den Islam nicht so wie es uns passt, oder wie wir es wollen, sondern so wie es Allaah swt uns befielht und dem besten Geschöpf Muhammad beigebracht hat.
Erinnern wir uns mal an die Gelehrten:
Sie haben es verabscheut Fragen zu beantworten... Warum? Sie hatten Angst etwas falsches zu sagen! Hatten sie etwa Angst vor den Menschen? Nein, sie hatten Angst und Taqwa (Gottesfurcht) vor Allaah swt! Sie hatten Angst über die Religion Allaahs auch nur einen Sandkorn falsches zu sagen... und wer sind wir, dass wir einfach unwissend reden? Dies geht an jeden einzelenen, der sich angesprochen fühlt und nicht angesprochen fühlt, es gilt zu aller erst an mich, und dann inshaallāh an euch!
Erinneren wir uns an Imaam Ash-Shaafii oder Imam Ahmed, Imam Abu Hanifa oder Imam Maalik Rahimahullaahu ajmain... wenn wir ihre Geschichten kennen, erkennen wir sehr schnell, dass sie viel Wissender als wir waren und den Islam nicht auf die leichte Schulter genommen haben!
Ich verfasse diesen Beitrag nicht, das wir einfach drüber zu lesen, sondern um ihn zu verstehen UND um ihn umzusetzten!
Ist der Islam so wenig wert, dass wir einfach Antworten wie wir wollen? Der Islam, die Wahre Religion, ist viel mehr wert, als es als einfache Sache anzusehen! Natürlich hat Allaah es uns erleichtert, aber wir dürfen die Grenzen nicht überschreiten!
Und ich möchte zu guter letzt einen sehr wichtigen Vers teilen: Wir alle kennen ihn aber wer von uns allen verinnerlicht ihn?
Der Vers Lautet:
Wahrlich im Gedenken Allahs werden die Herzen ruhig. (13:28)
So vergessen wir nicht Allaahs swt zu gedenken und Ihn subhana um Rechtleitung zu bitten!

Ein hoch qualifizierter Architekt, der alt geworden war, wollte in Rente gehen. Er erzählte seinem Arbeitgeber seine Pläne, in einem Wohnungsbau-Geschäft mit seiner Familie unbeschwert leben zu wollen. Der Arbeitgeber war traurig darüber, aber bat dem Architekten ein letztes Projekt für ihn durchzuführen. Der Architekt stimmte dieser Bitte zu, aber stellte sicher, dass das sein letztes Projekt sein wird. Er zog sich zurück und schenkte dem Bauen dieses Hauses viel Aufmerksamkeit. Doch es fehlte ihm etwas. Er suchte die alten Pläne, die er von anderen Architekten benutzt wurden. Durch diesen Betrug würde seine Karriere ein Ende finden.
Als der Job getan wurde, rief der Architekt seinen Arbeitgeber und zeigte ihm das Haus. Der Arbeitgeber übergab dem Architekten einige Papiere und den Schlüssel und sagte: "Das ist Ihr Haus, mein Geschenk für Sie."
Der Architekt war schockiert. Welche Scham! Wenn er nur gewusst hätte, dass er sein eigenes Haus baut, hätte er es besser gemacht als jedes andere Haus, das er jemals baute! Unsere Situation kann mit diesem Architekt verglichen werden.
Allah swt hat uns zu dieser Welt gesandt, um unsere Häuser im Paradies zu bauen, indem wir seine Befehlen folgen. Jetzt müssen wir entscheiden, wie gut wir die Häuser bauen möchten, wo wir für immer leben werden.
