Death By Metadata: Jeremy Scahill & Glenn Greenwald Reveal NSA Role in Assassinations Overseas
In the first exposé for their new venture, First Look Media's digital journal The Intercept, investigative journalists Jeremy Scahill and Glenn Greenwald reveal the National Security Agency is using complex analysis of electronic surveillance, rather than human intelligence, as the primary method to locate targets for lethal drone strikes. The NSA identifies targets based on controversial metadata analysis and cellphone tracking technologies, an unreliable tactic that has resulted in the deaths of innocent and unidentified people. The United States has reportedly carried out drone strikes without knowing whether the individual in possession of a tracked cellphone or SIM card is in fact the intended target of the strike. Scahill and Greenwald join us in this exclusive interview to discuss their report and the launch of their media project.

AMY GOODMAN: We turn now to a breaking news story about the National Security Agency and its secret role helping the military and CIA carry out assassinations overseas. According to journalists Jeremy Scahill and Glenn Greenwald, the NSA is using complex analysis of electronic surveillance, rather than human intelligence, as the primary method to locate targets for lethal drone strikes in Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
A former drone operator for JSOC, the military's Joint Special Operations Command, said the NSA identifies targets based on controversial metadata analysis and cellphone tracking technologies, but it's proven to be an unreliable tactic that's resulted in the deaths of innocent or unidentified people. The U.S. has reportedly carried out strikes without knowing whether the individual in possession of a tracked cellphone or SIM card is in fact the intended target of the strike. The former drone operator, who was a source in the story, said, quote, "It's really like we're targeting a cell phone. We're not going after people—we're going after their phones, in the hopes that the person on the other end of that missile is the bad guy," the quote says.
Jeremy Scahill and Glenn Greenwald have also revealed the NSA has equipped drones and other aircraft with devices known as "virtual base-tower transceivers." These devices create, in effect, a fake cellphone tower that can force a targeted person's device to lock onto the NSA's receiver without their knowledge.
Jeremy Scahill and Glenn Greenwald's article appears in the new online publication, TheIntercept.org, published by First Look Media, the newly formed media venture started by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. Glenn and Jeremy co-founded The Intercept with filmmaker Laura Poitras.
Glenn Greenwald Greenwald is the journalist who first broke the story about Edward Snowden. He was previously a columnist at The Guardian newspaper. He's joining us via Democracy Now! video stream from his home in Brazil.
Jeremy Scahill is producer and writer of the documentary film Dirty Wars, which has just been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary. He's also author of the book by the same name. Jeremy joins us from Los Angeles.
We welcome you both to Democracy Now! Jeremy, let's begin with you. Lay out the significance of this explosive story.
JEREMY SCAHILL: Well, Amy, we're living in the era of pre-crime, where President Obama is continuing many of the same policies of his predecessor George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. And there's this incredible reliance on technology to kill people who the United States thinks—doesn't necessarily know, but thinks—may one day pose some sort of a threat of committing an act of terrorism or of impacting U.S. interests. And the U.S. wants to shy away from having its own personnel on the ground in countries like Yemen or Pakistan or Somalia, eventually Afghanistan, and so what's happened is that there's this incredible reliance on the use of remotely piloted aircraft, i.e. drones.
What we discovered in the course of talking to sources, including this new source that we have who worked with both the Joint Special Operations Command and the National Security Agency, is that the NSA is providing satellite technology and communications intercept technology to the U.S. military special operations forces and the CIA that essentially mimics the activities of a cellphone tower and forces individual SIM cards or handsets of phones—there's two separate devices. When you have your telephone, your mobile phone, you have a SIM card in it, and that can be tracked, but also the device itself can be tracked. And what they do is they force the SIM card or the handset of individuals that they're tracking onto these cellphone networks, and the people don't know that their phones are being forced onto this cellphone tower that is literally put on the bottom of a drone and acts as a virtual transceiver. And so, when they are able to triangulate where this individual is, they can locate or track them to within about 30 feet or so of their location.
And what we understand is that under the current guidelines issued by the White House, President Obama gives a 60-day authorization to the CIA or the U.S. military to hunt down and kill these individuals who they've tracked with these SIM-card-tracking technologies or handset-tracking technologies, and that they only have to have two sources of intelligence to indicate that this is the individual that they're looking for. Those two sources cannot—can be signals intelligence, which is what I've just been describing, and they can also be what's called IMINT, or imagery intelligence, meaning just a satellite image of an individual that they think to be this suspected terrorist. They do not require an actual human confirmation that the individual SIM card or phone handset that they're tracking is in fact possessed by the person that they believe is a potential terrorist. And so, what we understand is that this is essentially death by metadata, where they think, or they hope, that the phone that they're blowing up is in the possession of a person that they've identified as a potential terrorist. But in the end, they don't actually really know. And that's where the real danger with this program lies.

السلام و علیکم ورحمتہ اللہ
صبح و شام کے اذکار
اللہ تعالیٰ کا ذکر، صبح و شام اور فجر و مغرب کے بعد کرنا چاہیے۔
1 آیۃ الکرسی اور تینوں قل (سورہ اخلاص، سورہ فلق اور سورۃ الناس) کو تین تین بار پڑھنا ہر چیز کو کفایت کرتا ہے۔ (حسن، ترمذی)۔
2 جو شخص یہ دعا صبح و شام تین تین بار پڑھتا ہے تو اس کو کوئی چیز نقصان نہ دے گی:
بِسْمِ اﷲِ الَّذِیْ لَایَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِہٖ شَیْئٌ فِی الْاَرْضِ وَ
لَا فِی السَّمَاؓءِ وَ ھُوَ السَّمِیْعُ الْعَلِیْمُ (حسن ترمذی/)۔
اللہ کے نام سے، جس کے نام (کی برکت)سے آسمان و زمین کی کوئی چیز نقصان نہیں دے سکتی اور وہ (اللہ) سننے اور جاننے والا ہے۔
اَللّٰھُمَّ عَافِنِیْ فِیْ بَدَنِیْ اَللّٰھُمَّ عَافِنِیْ فِیْ سَمْعِیْ اَللّٰھُمَّ
عَافِنِیْ فِیْ بَصَرِیْ لَآ اِلٰہَ اِلَّآ اَنْتَ
اے اللہ میرے جسم میں عافیت دے۔ اے اللہ میرے کانوں میں عافیت دے۔ اے اللہ میری آنکھوں میں عافیت دے۔ تیرے علاوہ کوئی معبود نہیں۔ (ابوداؤد:)۔
مندرجہ بالا دعا تین مرتبہ پڑھنی چاہیے۔
4 ایک بار: یَا حَیُّ یَا قَیُّوْم بِرَحْمَتِکَ اَسْتَغِیْثُ اَصْلِحْ لِیْ شَاْنِی کُلَّہٗ وَلَا تَکِلْنِیٓ اِلٰی نَفْسِی طَرْفَۃَ اَعْیُنٍ
(ترجمہ) اے ہمیشہ زندہ اور قائم رہنے والے۔ تیری رحمت سے میں مدد طلب کرتا ہوں۔ میرے ہر معاملے کو سلجھا دے اور مجھے میرے نفس کے سپرد ایک لمحے کے لئے بھی نہ کرنا۔ (ترغیب۔ صحیح۔ حدیث نمبر)۔
5 رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ و سلم نے فرمایا: ''جو شخص یہ دعا پڑھے اور شام سے پہلے مر جائے تو وہ جنتی ہو گا۔ اور رات کو پڑھے اور صبح سے پہلے مر جائے تو وہ بھی جنتی ہو گا۔ دعا یہ ہے:
اَللّٰھُمَّ اَنْتَ رَبِّیْ لَآاِلٰہَ اِلَّااَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِیْ وَاَنَاعَبْدُکَ وَانَاعَلٰی عَھْدِکَ وَ وَعْدِکَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ اَعُوْذُ بِکَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ اَبُوْٓئُ لَکَ بِنِعْمَتِکَ عَلَیَّ وَ اَبُوْٓئُ بِذَنْبِؑیْ فَاغْفِرْلِیْ فَاِنَّہٗ لَا یَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ
اے اللہ تو ہی میرا رب ہے۔ تیرے علاوہ کوئی عبادت کے لائق نہیں۔ تو نے مجھے پیدا کیا اور میں تیرا بندہ ہوں۔ اور میں تیرے عہد و پیمانپر قائم ہوں۔ اپنے آپ پر تیری رحمت کا اقرار کرتا ہوں۔ جس قدر طاقت رکھتا ہوں۔ میں نے جو کچھ کیا ہے اس کے
شر سے تیری پناہ چاہتا ہوں۔ اور اپنے گناہ کا اعتراف کرتا ہوں۔ مجھے بخش دے۔ کیونکہ تیرے سوا کوئی گناہوں کو نہیں بخش سکتا۔ (بخاری:)۔
أَستَغفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَ أَتُوبُ إِلَيهِ....رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا :
" نیکی کی طرف راہنمائی کرنے والا ایسا ہی ہوتا ہے جیسا کہ اس نے خود ہی نیکی کرلی،اور برائی کی طرف راہنمائی کرنے والا بھی ایسا ہی ہوتا ہے جیسا کہ اس نے خود برائی کرلی "

In many of the Capitalist states, the expression "Let the season of love begin" is being heard again. It's that time of the year again, when roses abound, trinkets are exchanged and confessions of love and promises (which are rarely kept) are declared - February 14th known as St. Valentine's Day. It is the time that for centuries has been dedicated to honour lovers.
On this day the postal services will be inundated with the responsibility of playing "cupid", forwarding messages of "true love". Our children will be making Valentines cards or, if they're in Wales, love spoons which they will be encouraged to give to their valentine in the playground.
So what's the harm in all this, you may well ask? After all it's only a day to remind your spouse of how much you love them, or for the children it's just a bit of fun. But have you ever stopped to wonder who St Valentine was and where this archaic tradition of St. Valentine's Day came from?
During the fifth century the Catholic Church wanted to end a pagan fertility rite that the Romans practised every year since the 4th century BC. During the month of February a lottery was held to celebrate a young man's rite of passage to the "god" Lupericus. Young teenage girls participated in this lottery where their names were placed in a box and drawn at random by young men. Through the lottery these young men would be assigned to the chosen girl, for 'mutual pleasure', for the duration of a year until the next year's lottery.
The Church was unhappy with the promiscuous nature of this ritual and tried to end it by selecting a "Lover's Saint", who would be honoured in replacement of the ritual of Lupericus. They chose a bishop by the name of Valentine, who was executed in the 3rd century AD, for defying the Emperor Claudius who banned marriages saying married men made poor soldiers who did not want to leave their families during battles. Valentine invited lovers to come to him to be married in secret, for which he was killed. However before he died he supposedly sent a farewell message, to the jailer's daughter whom he had fallen in love with while in prison, that read "From your Valentine."
Many things may be said about this "tradition", but there is one important.
concept that Muslims should draw from it. It is essential for Muslims to realise that Islam is a comprehensive way of life whose source of reference is exclusively the hukm shar'i (divine legislative rule). This is the only source of all rites, traditions and practices that Muslims are permitted to follow. From this source it is clear that Islam prohibits the celebration of kufr festivals. St. Valentines Day is, from its very origin, a pagan festival continuously redefined during various periods of ignorance.
Islam, through the hukm shar'i, clearly recognises what the festivals of the Muslims are and how the festivals of the kuffar should be seen.
It is reported that Anas Bin Malik (ra) said;
"When the Prophet (saw) came to Medina, the people had two holidays from the days of Jahiliyyah. He (saw) said, "When I came to you, you had two holidays you used to celebrate in jahiliyyah. Allah has replaced them for you with better days, the days of slaughter (Adha) and the day of Fitr."
In reality, the imitation of rituals and practices of the Western society are a subtle means of integrating Muslims into the non-Islamic way of life. In contemporary society, the concept of integration is being drummed into to the Muslim mindset, which demands that we accept and become part of this "multicultural society". However, the Muslim Ummah must be vigilant and recognise the mechanisms used by the kuffar in order to reshape our understanding of our way of life as revealed in the Qur'an. St.Valentine's day is one such example; where relationships outside of the institution of marriage are not only accepted but also encouraged - a gross violation of the Sharee'ah, which enjoins modesty and chastity.
Throughout the country countless numbers of schools, universities and clubs are in preparation for balls and parties, inviting the unsuspecting Muslim populace into these havens of free-mixing in the name of integration - and love. It is ironic to think that what the Church tried to achieve so long ago was the preservation of the institution of marriage, in the guise of St Valentines Day. Yet today we see the return of promiscuity in the society where St Valentines Day is used as a tool to instigate illicit relationships resulting in fornication, unwanted pregnancies, abortions and all things that lead to the degradation and loss of honour in society. So is this the kind of message we wish to give our children?
In Islam the sexual relations between a man and woman are clearly defined by the Sharee'ah rules through a particular system, which is marriage.
Ibn Mas'ud narrates that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said;
"O you youngsters. Whosoever amongst you can afford to marry should marry, because it will help you to lower his gaze, and guard his modesty (ie private parts from unlawful sex). And whosoever is not able to marry he should fast, because it will be protection for him."
The hukm shar'i ensures that the society established upon it will be free of promiscuity and will exhibit a high level of moral awareness. This is clearly absent in the current Western societies, and unfortunately we see this being introduced into the Islamic lands too. The Sharee'ah recognizes the needs and instincts of both man and woman. The family is protected and strengthened by the prohibition of fornication, adultery, free mixing of the sexes and the regulation of the dress code.
As Muslims living in Britain and the West, we need to realise the implications of integration. Every thought and consequent action of a Muslim should be in reference to the hukm shar'i, as it is the only legitimate source of guidance for us. Whether it is a menial task or a major decision in private or public life, we should only act after referring to what Allah (swt) has revealed. Otherwise we may fall prey to the host of deficient and un-Islamic concepts that surround us in a non-Islamic society, such as freedom, democracy, integration and self-interest. Also if we begin to adopt non-Islamic standards in our lives, for the sake of pleasing those around us, we should be aware that this can only lead us astray, and their pleasure comes only at the expense of our deen.
"And the Jews and Christians will never be pleased with you until you follow their millah (way of life)." [TMQ Al-Baqarah: 120]
Behind every kufr fairytale, superstition, novel, song, contract, newspaper, dossier, law and ideology, lurks a dangerous concept that contradicts the hukm shar'i and more importantly has the potential to threaten our understanding of Islam and our resumption of its way of life.

Beliau sampai di Madinah sebelum kedatangan Rasulullah Shalalahu 'alaihi Wassalam. Beliau meninggal dalam peperangan Qadisiah membawahi sebuah brigade. Abdullah bin Ummi Maktum, orang mekah suku Quraisy. Dia mempunyai ikatan keluarga dengan Rasululah Shalalahu 'alaihi Wassalam. Yaitu anak paman Ummul Mu'minin Khadijah binti Khuwailid Ridhwanullah 'Alaiha. Bapaknya Qais bin Zaid, dan ibunya 'Atikah binti 'Abdullah. Ibunya bergelar "Umi Maktum" karena anaknya 'Abdullah lahir dalam keadaan buta total. Abdullah bin Ummi Maktum menyaksikan ketika cahaya Islam mulai memancar di Makkah. Allah melapangkan dadanya menerima agama baru itu. Karena itu tidak diragukan lagi dia termasuk kelompok yang pertama-tama masuk Islam. Sebagai muslim kelompok pertama, 'Abdullah turut menanggung segala macam suka duka kaum muslimin di Makkah ketika itu. Dia turut menderita siksaan kaum Quraisy seperti diderita kawan-kawannya seagama, berupa penganiayaan dan berbagai macam tindakan kekerasan lainnya. Tetapi apakah karena tindakan-tindakan kekerasan itu Ibnu ummi Maktum menyerah? Tidak....! Dia tidak pernah mundur dan tidak lemah iman. Bahkan dia semakin teguh berpegang pada ajaran Islam dan Kitabullah. Dia semakin rajin mempelajari syariat Islam dan sering mendatangi majelis Rasulullah. Begitu rajin dia mendatangi majelis Rasulullah, menyimak dan menghafal Al-Qur'an, sehingga setiap waktu senggang selalu disinya, dan setiap kesempatan yang baik selalu disebutnya. Bahkan dia sangat rewel. Karena rewelnya, dia beruntung memperoleh apa yang diinginkannya dari Rasulullah, di samping keuntungan bagi yang lain-lain juga. Pada masa permulaan tersebut, Rasulullah sering mengadakan dialog dengan pemimpin-pemimpin Quraisy, mengharapkan semoga mereka masuk Islam. Pada suatu hari beliau bertatap muka dengan 'Utbah bin Rabi'ah, Syaibah bin Rabi'ah, 'Amr bin Hisyam alias Abu Jahl, Umayyah bin Khalaf dan walid bin Mughirah, ayah saifullah Khalid bin walid. Rasulullah berunding dan bertukar pikiran dengan mereka tentang Islam. Beliau sangat ingin mereka menerima dakwah dan menghentikan penganiayaan terhadap para sahabat beliau. Sementara beliau berunding dengan sungguh-sungguh, tiba-tiba 'Abdullah bin Ummi maktum datang mengganggu minta dibacakan kepadanya ayat-ayat Al-Qur'an. Kata 'Abdullah, "Ya, Rasulullah! Ajarkanlah kepadaku ayat-ayat yang telah diajarkan Allah kepada Anda!" Rasul yang mulia terlengah memperdulikan permintaan 'Abdullah. Bahkan beliau agak acuh kepada interupsinya itu. Lalu beliau membelakangi 'Abdullah dan melanjutkan pembicaraan dengan pemimpin Quraisy tersebut. Mudah-mudahan dengan Islamnya mereka, Islam tambah kuat dan dakwah bertambah lancar. Selesai berbicara dengan mereka, Rasulullah bermaksud hendak pulang. Tetapi tiba tiba penglihatan beliau gelap dan kepala beliau terasa sakit seperti kena pukul. Kemudian Allah mewahyukan firman-Nya kepada beliau: "Dia ( Muhammad ) bermuka masam dan berpaling, karena seorang buta datang kepadanya, Tahukah kamu, barangkali ia ingin membersihkan dirinya (dari dosa), atau dia (ingin) mendapatkan pengajaran, lalu pengajaran itu memberi manfaat kepadanya? Adapun orang yang merasa dirinya serba cukup, maka kamu melayaninya. Padahal tidak ada (celaan) atasmu kalau mereka tidak membersihkan diri (beriman). Adapun orang yang datang kepadamu dengan bergegas (untuk mendapatkan pengajaran), sedangkan ia takut kepada (Allah), maka kamu mengabaikannya. Sekali-kali jangan (begitu)! Sesungguhnya ajaran Allah itu suatu peringatan. Maka siapa yanag menghendaki tentulah ia memperhatikannya. (Ajaran ajaran itu) terdapat di dalam kitab-kitab yang dimuliakan, yang ditinggikan lagi disucikan, di tangan para utusan yang mulia lagi (senantiasa) berbakti." (QS. 'Abasa : 1 - 16). Enam belas ayat itulah yang disampaikan Jibril Al-Amin ke dalam hati Rasulullah sehubungan dengan peristiwa 'Abdullah bin Ummi maktum, yang senantiasa dibaca sejak diturunkan sampai sekarang, dan akan terus dibaca sampai hari kiamat. Sejak hari itu Rasulullah tidak lupa memberikan tempat yang mulia bagi 'Abdullah apabila dia datang. Beliau menyilahkan duduk ditempat duduk beliau. Beliau tanyakan keadaannya dan beliau penuhi kebutuhannya. Tidaklah heran kalau beliau memuliakan 'Abdullah demikian rupa; bukankah teguran dari langit itu sangat keras! Tatkala tekanan dan penganiayaan kaum Quraisy terhadap kaum muslimin semakin berat dan menjadi-jadi, Allah Ta'ala mengizinkan kaum muslimin dan Rasul-Nya hijrah. 'Abdullah bin Ummi maktum bergegas meninggalkan tumpah-darahnya untuk menyelamatkan agamanya. Dia bersama sama Mush'ab bin Umar sahabat-sahabat Rasul yang pertama-tama tiba di Madinah, setibanya di Yatsrib (Madinah), 'Abdullah dan Mush'ab segera berdakwah, membacakan ayat-ayat Al-Qur'an dan mengajarkan pengajaran Isalam. Setelah Rasulullah tiba di Madinah, beliau mengangkat 'Abdullah bin Ummi Maktum serta Bilal bin rabah menjadi Muadzin Rasulullah. Mereka berdua bertugas meneriakkan kalimah tauhid lima kali sehari semalam, mengajak orang banyak beramal saleh dan mendorong masyarakat merebut kemenangan. Apabila Bilal adzan, maka 'Abdullah qamat. Dan bila 'Abdullah adzan, maka Bilal qamat. Dalam bulan Ramadhan tugas mereka bertambah. Bilal adzan tengah malam membangunkan kaum muslimin untuk sahur, dan 'Abdullah adzan ketika fajar menyingsing, memberi tahu kaum muslimin waktu imsak sudah masuk, agar menghentikan makam minum dan segala yang membatalkan puasa. Untuk memuliakan 'Abdullah bin Ummi maktum, beberapa kali Rasulullah mengangkatnya menjadi Wali Kota Madinah menggantikan beliau, apabila meninggalkan kota. Tujuh belas kali jabatan tersebut dipercayakan beliau kepada 'Abdullah. Salah satu diantaranya, ketika meninggalkan kota Madinah untuk membebaskan kota Makkah dari kekuasaan kaum musyrikin Quraisy. Setelah perang Badar, Allah menurunkan ayat-ayat Al-Qur'an, mengangkat derajat kaum muslimin yang pergi berperang fi sabilillah. Allah melebihkan derajat mereka yang pergi berperang atas orang-orang yang tidak pergi berperang, dan mencela orang yang tidak pergi karena ingin bersantai-santai. Ayat-ayat tersebut sangat berkesan di hati 'Abdullah bin Ummi Maktum. Tetapi baginya sukar mendapatkan kemuliaan tersebut karena dia buta. Lalu dia berkata kepada Rasulullah, "Ya, Rasulullah! Seandainya saya tidak buta, tentu saya pergi berperang." Kemudian dia bermohon kepada Allah dengan hati penuh tunduk, semoga Allah menurunkan pula ayat-ayat mengenai orang-orang yang keadaannnya cacat (udzur) seperti dia, tetapi hati mereka ingin sekali hendak turut berperang. Dia senantiasa berdoa dengan segala kerendahan hati. Katanya, "Wahai Allah! Turunkanlah wahyu mengenai orang-orang yang udzur sepertiku!" Tidak berapa lama kemudian Allah memperkenankan doanya. Zaid bin Tsabit, sekretaris Rasulullah yang bertugas menuliskan wahyu menceritakan, "aku duduk di samping Rasulullah. Tiba tiba beliau diam, sedangkan paha beliau terletak di atas pahaku. Aku belum pernah merasakan beban yang paling berat melebihi berat paha Rasulullah ketika itu. Sesudah beban berat yang menekan pahaku hilang, beliau bersabda, "Tulislah, hai Zaid!" Lalu aku menuliskan, "Tidak sama orang-orang mukmin yang duduk (tidak turut berperang) dengan pejuang-pejuang yang berjihad fi sabilillah..." (An-Nisaa : 95). Ibnu Ummi berdiri seraya berkata, "Ya Rasulullah! Bagaimana dengan orang-orang yang tidak sanggup pergi berjihad (berperang karena cacat)?" Selesai pertanyaan 'Abdullah, Rasulullah berdiam dan paha beliau menekan pahaku, seolah-olah aku menanggung beban berat seperti tadi. Setelah beban berat itu hilang, Rasulullah berkata, "Coba baca kembali yang telah engkau tulis!" Aku membaca , "Tidak sama orang-orang mukmin yang duduk (tidak turut berperang)." lalu kata beliau. Tulis! "Kecuali bagi orang-orang yang tidak mampu." Maka turunlah pengecualian yang diharap-harapkan Ibnu Ummi Maktum. Meskipun Allah telah memaafkan Ibnu Ummi Maktum dan orang-orang udzur seperti dia untuk tidak berjihad, namun dia enggan bersantai-santai beserta orang-orang yang tidak turut berperang. Dia tetap membulatkan tekat untuk turut berperang fi sabilillah. Tekad itu timbul dalam dirinya, karena jiwa yang besar tidak dapat dikatakan besar, kecuali bila orang itu memikul pula pekerjaan besar. Maka karena itu dia sangat gandrung untuk turut berperang dan menetapkan sendiri tugasnya di medan perang. Katanya, "Tempatkan saya antara dua barisan sebagai pembawa bendera. Saya akan memeganya erat-erat untuk kalian. Saya buta, karena itu saya pasti tidak akan lari." Tahun keempat belas Hijriyah, Khalifah 'Umar bin Khaththab memutuskan akan memasuki Persia dengan perang yang menentukan, untuk menggulingkan pemerintahan yang zalim, dan menggantinya dengan pemerintahan Islam yang demokratis dan bertauhid. 'Umar memerintahkan kepada segenap Gubernur dan pembesar dalam pemerintahannya, 'Jangan ada seorang jua pun yang ketinggalan dari orang orang bersenjata, orang yang mempunyai kuda, atau yang berani, atau yang berpikiran tajam, melainkan hadapkan semuanya kepada saya sesegera mungkin!" Maka berkumpulah di Madinah kaum Muslimin dari segala penjuru, memenuhi panggilan Khalifah 'Umar. Di antara mereka itu terdapat seorang prajurit buta, 'Abdullah bin Ummi maktum. Khalifah 'Umar mengangkat Sa'ad bin Abi Waqash menjadi panglima pasukan yang besar itu. Kemudian Khalifah memberikan intruksi-intruksi dan pengarahan kepada Sa'ad. Setelah pasukan besar itu sampai di Qadisiyah. 'Abdullah bin Ummi maktum memakai baju besi dan perlengkapan yang sempurna. Dia tampil sebagai pembawa bendera kaum muslimin dan berjanji akan senantiasa mengibarkannya atau mati di samping bendera itu. Pada hari ke tiga perang Qadisiyah, perang berkecamuk dengan hebat, yang belum pernah disaksikan sebelumnya. Kaum muslimin berhasil memenangkan perang tersebut dengan kemenangan paling besar yang belum pernah direbutnya. Maka pindahlah kekuasaan kerajaan Persia yang besar ke tangan kaum muslimin. Dan runtuhlah mahligai yang termegah, dan berkibarlah bendera tauhid di bumi penyembah berhala itu. Kemenangan yang meyakinkan itu dibayar dengan darah dan jiwa ratusan syuhada. Diantara mereka yang syahid itu terdapat 'Abdullah bin Ummi Maktum yang buta. Briton carries out bomb attack in Syria
UK authorities have affirmed reports that a British national was behind a bomb attack in the Syrian city of Aleppo last week.
The militant known as Abu Suleiman al-Britani, believed to be of Pakistani origin, is said to be from Sussex.
The man was, meanwhile, believed to have had links to the Jabhat al-Nusra arm of terrorist group al-Qaeda in Syria.
He purportedly drove an armored vehicle toward a jail in Aleppo, causing a huge explosion after ramming into the building. Hundreds of militants followed behind, managing to free up to 300 prisoners held by Syrian forces.
Britani is reportedly the eighth Briton to have died fighting since Syria's bloody civil war began three years ago.
Media reports say hundreds of British nationals have joined foreign-backed extremist militants in Syria.
Britain is among the Western countries which have supported armed militancy to topple the Syrian government.
One in 10 foreign militants fighting against the popular government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria is believed to be from Europe. European officials have repeatedly warned of the threats that these militants could pose upon they return to their home countries.
