    Driven by insatiable greed (and for new opportunities to sell to the working class), banks begin to 'securitize' home mortgages en masse. The process refers to the pooling together of contractual debts such as home mortgages. Often these were packaged with other debts, and sold onto investors.

    Faisal Islam's latest book 'The Default Line' is a damning indictment of the unscrupulous actions that housing brokers undertook during the run up of the financial crisis in 2007.

    The book takes a close look at how brokers took advantage of the credit boom during the first decade of this century, by offering mortgages to lenders through deceptive practices, which lead to the creation of a housing bubble, which in when in turn, burst, leaving a wake of carnage that the US and Europe is still reeling from today.

    By way of a short reminder, let us recap in further detail what actually happened:

    • After the dot-com bubble burst in the US tech markets during the early 2000's, in effort to kick-start the US economy, the US Federal Reserve began lowering US Central Bank interest rates to an all-time low.

    • US banks responded in kind by massively expanding credit lines to everybody and anybody (as loans had now become cheap). A peculiar feature of Capitalism here is that banks can multiply what they loan far in excess of what they actually hold on deposit. Cue what is called a 'Credit Boom'.

    • One such feature of a credit boom is the feeling of euphoria that is held amongst the masses. Easy credit allows them to pursue the American dream: fancy cars, the big house, flat-screen TV's and multiple holidays. Bear in mind this is being funded through credit – bank loans and credit cards.

    • The poorer segment of society are also sold the same dream. Especially the biggest dream, of property ownership.

    • Driven by insatiable greed (and for new opportunities to sell to the working class), banks begin to 'securitize' home mortgages en masse. The process refers to the pooling together of contractual debts such as home mortgages. Often these were packaged with other debts, and sold onto investors.

    • In previous times, it was the bank who had the responsibility of ensuring that it adequately covered its risks by ensuring that home owners were able to pay back mortgages. With securitization, the mortgage was no longer in possession of the bank, having been sold onto another investor. Thus the banks no longer had the incentive to ensure that homeowners actually had the means to pay.

    • Enter brokers, who helped to sell 'sub-prime'mortgages or which in many cases meant selling homes to people who had no jobs, incomes or any assets of their own. The brokers earned their fees from sales commission, which meant they were incentivised to sell as many homes as possible –regardless of the consequences.

    • Eventually this elaborate Ponzi scheme fall apart with tragic consequences. The huge number of home owners who couldn't pay their mortgages (when interest rates rose), began to default.

    • Since the actual mortgages themselves were sold on, multiple times (through the process of securitization), banks had no idea, which other banks actually held onto the defaulted loans. These debts had now became 'toxic', to the extent that banks were unwilling to deal with each other– this resulted in the 'Credit Crunch' we so often heard of.

    • In effort to unfreeze the credit crunch, governments stepped into to the tune of billions, bailing out many banks and offering them an essentially unlimited credit line.

    • Such easy money to bail out the banks have come at a cost. The huge debt that the governments took on by bailing out their banks, is now being transferred to their own populations. In many European countries this has been taken up in the form of harsh austerity measures – a massive reduction of government spending on welfare and a huge increase in taxation.

    In the next post, we will take summary look at how the Islamic Economic system avoids such pitfalls, and why it is of the utmost importance that Bangladesh does not follow the same models of Capitalist economics or finance.

    Commuters stuck in the Bangladeshi capital's snarled traffic these days have a new distraction to catch their gaze: Hundreds of billboards extolling the purported achievements of the country's beleaguered government.

    From hoardings at intersections, along highways and atop buildings, the outsized face of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina smiles down, accompanied by the slogan: "Continuity for Development."

    The advertisements, which appeared across Dhaka last month on the eve of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr, have stirred tensions in Bangladesh's highly polarized political scene ahead of national elections slated for January.

    The Awami League government is acting more and more like an autocratic dictator in a totalitarian state every day similar to Russia under Communism or Libya under Gadaffi.

    They seem to think that the public are shallow and can be fooled by posters and billboards regarding the achievements of the government, which have not been listed for public scrutiny.

    The people of Bangladesh experience price hikes, load shedding, corruption, hartal, session jot at educational institutions, unemployment, and many other problems on a daily basis.

    It is well known that whichever secular party is in power it will look after its own people and provide them with employment, tenders, wealth and a host of opportunities, which is denied to the majority of the citizens.

    With elections getting closer, we will see more displays of power by both the Awami League and the BNP who seek to convince people by a variety of different ways, i.e. bribes, controlling the streets with their party thugs and emotional blackmail by using Islam.

    The sincere people of Bangladesh who seek a solution to the multiple problems which exist because of the secular system must reject this politics of corruption and nepotism by the AL and BNP, and instead seek out a sincere Islamic political party.

    One which has solutions beyond slogans, one which has a constitution, one which has sincere politicians within its ranks, and one which welcomes members of the Ummah to work with them to solve the plethora of problems Bangladesh faces based on Islam.

    Die Prüfungen Allahs:

    „Und Wir prüften sie mit Gutem und Bösem, auf dass sie sich bekehren mögen. [7:168]"

    „Oder glaubt ihr etwa, in das Paradies einzutreten, ohne dass euch das gleiche traf wie die vor euch? Es traf sie Unglück und Not, und sie wurden so hin- und hergeschüttelt, dass der Gesandte und die Gläubigen bei ihm sprachen: "Wann kommt Allahs Hilfe (endlich)?" Doch Allahs Hilfe ist Nähe!" (Quran, 2:214)

    „Der Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sagte: „Gedenke Allahs in Zeiten der Erleichterung, damit Er deiner in Zeiten der Erschwernis gedenkt." (Ahmad)

    "Meinen die Menschen, sie würden in Ruhe gelassen werden, wenn sie bloß sagten: „Wir glauben", und meinen sie, sie würden nicht auf die Probe gestellt?"[29:2]

    Warum prüft uns Allah?

    So ist es mit dem Leben in der Dunya, eine Prüfung die wir alle gehen mussen.

    Allah sagt doch: „Meinen die Menschen, dass sie in Ruhe gelassen werden, nur weil sie sagen: Wir glauben, ohne dass sie geprüft werden?"

    Allah prüft den Mumin (Ein wahrer Gläubiger, der den Imaan verinnerlicht hat und den Islam praktiziert), sobald er „Ashhaddu an Laillaha Illalah" ausspricht. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt, fängt für ihn bereits seine Prüfung an. Und er wird sich fragen, warum verliere ich meine Freunde? Warum verliere ich meinen Arbeitsplatz? Wieso legen mir so viele Menschen Steine in den Weg? Warum bekomme ich so viele Probleme, obwohl ich gläubig geworden bin? Wieso habe ich selbst Feinde innerhalb meines eigenen Kreises? Warum sinkt mein Ansehen in der Gesellschaft, wo ich doch früher immer im Mittelpunkt stand. Es gibt Zeitpunkte, wo man anfängt an sich selbst zu zweifeln und viel grübelt, ob das Leben das man lebt so richtig ist. Doch der wahre Mumin zeichnet sich durch Standhaftigkeit, Geduld und Dankbarkeit Allah (swt.) gegenüber aus und freut sich sogar über diese Prüfung.

    Und was ist mit dem Kafir?

    Jedoch prüft Allah den Kafir ( Ungläubigen ) nicht. Ganz im Gegenteil, er gibt dem Kafir immer mehr.

    Denn Allah sagt im Quran (sinngemäße Übersetzung): „Und wir geben Ihnen, damit sie in Sünden wachsen." Allah gibt somit den Kafir (Ungläubigen) sehr viele zahlreiche Gaben im Leben. Sowie die Gesundheit, materielle Sachen und ein schönes, problemloses und von Sorgen entferntes Leben.

    Alles was er will und was sein Herz begehrt, wird ihm auf einem goldenes Tablett serviert. Warum?

    Nicht weil Allah die Ungläubigen mehr liebt als uns, und auch nicht auf dem Grund, weil es gut für ihn wäre. Sondern weil Allah im Quran sagt: „Und wir geben Ihnen, damit sie in Sünden wachsen." Somit ist es eine Strafe für sie, die sie jedoch als Gnade empfinden. Denn hierdurch verfallen sie immer mehr in Sünden, und die Strafe im Jenseits wird immer größer, und der Tag der Abrechnung immer härter.

    Gibt es einen Lohn für den Mumin?

    Aber Allah prüft den Mumin, aus zweierlei Gründen. Entweder um seine Sünden zu tilgen, oder um seine Stufe im Paradies zu erhöhen. Was ist dass für eine Gnade? Nur aus diesem Grund, schickt er dir eine Prüfung. Prüfungen wiederfahren nur Menschen, die Allah sehr nahe stehen. Menschen, deren Islamzugehörigkeit nicht nur ein Lippenbekenntnis ist, sondern wahren Gläubigen, die den Islam leben und lieben und Allahs Gesetzen ohne Zögern gehorchen.

    Wir müssen uns immer vor Augen führen, dass unsere Prüfungen im Diesseits niemals hart sind.

    Wir haben keine Vorstellung über das Wort der Härte. Die wahren harten Prüfungen haben die Propheten (Friede und Segen auf ihnen allen) erlitten. Die Propheten waren die besten Geschöpfe, die Allah auf die Welt gesetzt hat und sie dienen als Vorbilder für die Menschen. Trotzdem hat er sie am meisten geprüft mit Prüfungen, die mit unseren gar nicht vergleichbar sind.

    Je stärker dein Imaan ist, desto größer und schwieriger, ist deine Prüfung im Diesseits.

    Jedoch haben die wirklich härtesten Prüfungen nur die Propheten erlitten:

    Adam (as.) war im Paradies, und Allah hat ihn vom Paradies verbannt und ihn zur Erde geschickt. Was war dass für eine harte Prüfung? Im Paradies lag alles was sein Herz begehrte vor ihm, ohne dass er ein Wort dazu gesprochen hatte, und nun musste er auf die Erde zurück um selbst seine Nahrung zu suchen.
    Nuh (as.) hatte 950 Jahre den Islam gepredigt, er wurde gequält, man hat ihn verspottet, und selbst sein Sohn und seine Frau waren ungläubig und gehörten zu seinen Feinden.
    Ibrahim (as.) wurde von seinem eigenen Vater zuhause verbannt und anschließend wurde er ins Feuer geworfen. Er war einen Monat lang im Feuer.
    Ayyub (as.) war 17 Jahre lang krank. Man konnte seine Haut mit der Hand abreißen. Obwohl er ein Prophet Gottes war, musste er viel leiden.
    Yusuf(as) war 7 Jahre lang im Gefängnis ohne auch nur einen Korn von Unrecht jemanden zugefügt zu haben. Er hat diese Zeit mit Standhaftigkeit und Geduld gemeistert.
    Musa (as.) hat bei dem Faraoh gelebt. Ein Luxusleben, wovon viele nur träumen. Aufeinmal wird er ihn in die Wüste geschmissen. Nun musste er als Schafhirte arbeiten und zur Religion Allahs aufrufen.
    isa (as.) hatte nicht einmal ein Haus über den Kopf. Und die Juden haben ihn auf übelster Weise gequält und ihn versucht mit Steinen zu töten.
    Jonas (as.) war im Bauch eines Waals, drei Tage und drei Nächte lang. Wer kann sich das vorstellen?

    Habibullah Prophet Muhammad (saw) hat die härteste Prüfung aller härtesten Prüfungen bekommen. Warum? Er dient als Vorbild für die gesamte Menschheit bis zum jüngsten Tag.Er ist, der der Allah am meisten fürchtet. Der, den Allah am meisten liebt. Und trotzdem wurde er am härtesten geprüft.
    Können wir uns dass vorstellen? Liest seine Sirah und eure Prüfungen werden euch winzig vorkommen!

    Ein Rat an dich:

    Allah (azzawadschal) prüft den Menschen. Er sagt: "Komm nah zu Uns, wende dich an Mich!" Er prüft dich, damit er Deine Stimme hört, damit du im letzten Drittel von der Nacht aufstehst und Qiyam machst, nachts im Gebet stehst und deine Hände nach Ihm ausstreckst. Wann hast du das letzte mal Qiyam gemacht und Allah von deinen Problemen erzählt? Erzähle Allah deine Probleme! Er will deine Stimme hören.

    Was lernen wir daraus?

    Wen Allah dich wahrhaftig liebt, dann wird er dir eine Prüfung schicken. Nur durch Prüfungen sieht Allah, wer wirklich standhaft in seiner Religionsausübung ist und sich geduldig ergibt und wer es nicht tut. Wisse liebe Bruder und wisse liebe Schwester, nur die Geliebten Allahs werden geprüft. Wenn du ein belangloses Leben ohne Prüfungen und Härten führst, so musst du an dir zweifeln und deinen Glauben überdenken.
