Eigentlich müssten sämtliche westliche Regierungen protestieren. Doch sie reagieren nur verhalten. Peinlich ist das. Ein einst mehr oder weniger demokratisch gewählter Präsident wird von einem autoritären Staat zum Tode verurteilt – und niemand regt sich auf. Genau so war es am Samstag, als ein ägyptisches Gericht das Todesurteil gegen den früheren Präsidenten Mohammed Mursi verkündete, wohlgemerkt den ersten frei gewählten Regierungschef in der Geschichte des Landes. Trotzdem ließen die offiziellen Reaktionen nicht nur von deutscher Regierungsseite mehrere Stunden auf sich warten. Nach gründlichem Abwägen, schien es, meldete sich schließlich am Abend Außenminister Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) zu Wort und kritisierte das Urteil: "Für uns ist das in Deutschland eine Form der Strafe, die wir kategorisch ablehnen." Der Bundesregierung sei es wichtig, dass die ägyptische Justiz nach Recht und Gesetz und nicht nach politischen Maßstäben handele. Ob das in diesem Fall geschehen ist, müsse in den nächsten Tagen geklärt werden. Das ist sehr diplomatisch formuliert, wo doch die Antwort schnell zu finden ist. Es spricht wenig dafür, dass hier Richter ihr Urteil nach Recht und Gesetz gefällt haben. Politischer kann ein Prozess kaum sein. Die Verurteilungen zeigen in all ihrer Drastik, in welchem Ausmaß die ägyptische Justiz Teil des Militärregimes ist. Politischer Dissens wird nicht parlamentarisch ausgefochten, sondern im Gerichtssaal. Schlimmer noch: Wer aufbegehrt, muss mit der Todesstrafe rechnen. Politische Justiz Dass die Prozesse eine Farce und politisch motiviert sind, zeigt sich an weniger prominenten Angeklagten. Zwei der nun Verurteilten sind bereits seit Jahren tot. Ein anderer wurde für Vergehen verurteilt, die er in der jüngeren Vergangenheit begangen haben soll – obwohl er seit 19 Jahren im Gefängnis sitzt. Wogegen die Justiz eigentlich ins Feld zieht, zeigt auch die lange Liste der nun Verurteilten: friedliche Oppositionelle und Demonstranten, Studenten, Journalisten und Akademiker – allen ist gemein, dass sie das Militärregime kritisiert haben. Nicht alle von ihnen saßen wie Mursi auf der Anklagebank. Viele von ihnen erlebten ihr Verfahren in Abwesenheit – unter ihnen der hoch geachtete ägyptische Professor Emad Schahin, der an den Eliteuniversitäten Harvard und Georgetown Politikwissenschaften lehrt. Unter dem Vorwurf der Spionage wurde er ebenfalls zum Tode verurteilt. Wer also zu Mursi schweigt, übergeht auch all diese Opfer politischer Willkür. Die Regierungen westlicher Demokratien sollten sich fragen, warum sie im Fall Mursi ihre eigenen Werte verraten. Die Begründung, es handele sich um einen Islamisten, wird niemand aussprechen.
