Don't forget Syria; They are wonderful people; They need help
Three years ago, Syria's hospitals were the envy of the Middle East. The average life expectancy was 75, higher than in many parts of the UK. Nine out of every 10 medicines provided by the country's extensive network of public and private clinics were made by the country's own flourishing pharmaceutical industry. Back then, Syrians could expect a long healthy life, and care and comfort in times of sickness.
Today, when Elizabeth Hoff, the World Health Organization's (WHO) representative in Syria, walks to her office through the wintry streets of central Damascus, she passes families of refugees shivering in the cold. They have come to the capital for security and because it is one of the few places where the hospitals are still open.
"It really breaks my heart," she says, her voice, which until now has recounted official statistics in steady stoic monotone, cracking with emotion.
"I have been in Syria for a year and a half and the difference in that time is devastating to see. The healthcare system has totally, totally broken down. Have you seen a child build up a beautiful Lego house? And then someone has stepped all over it. This is what the health system in Syria looks like when you get outside Damascus." Nearly three years since the outbreak of the civil war, Syria is now in an unprecedented situation. It is the first state ever to have established a fully functioning, highly effective, 21st-century healthcare system – and then seen it collapse.
Two-thirds of the country's hospitals have been affected by the fighting and 40 per cent of them have been destroyed or rendered altogether useless. Ninety per cent of the pharmaceutical industry, which used to pump out drugs not only for domestic use but for export to 50 countries globally, is defunct. The government is now dependent on medical supplies from its allies – Russia, Iran and, to a lesser extent, Cuba and Honduras, as well as UN-coordinated aid coming in through Damascus and one border crossing with Iraq.
In areas completely out of government control, smaller aid agencies and NGOs are the main source of drugs and equipment, ferried in from neighboring countries.
Near the front lines, medical facilities have been targeted, along with medical professionals, by forces on both sides, under the grim logic that the fewer doctors there are to put to put people back together, the fewer men will come back to fight.
Doctors, nurses, surgeons, anesthetists and other health professionals have left the country. Charities, either independently or coordinated by the UN and the WHO, which are still working out of Damascus, have tried to fill the gaps, and the influx of heroic foreign doctors has made headlines in their home countries. But as Elizabeth Hoff repeats again and again: "It is not enough."
The war has killed 120,000 – an estimate that puts the number of injured, combatant and civilian, at around 575,000, according the WHO. In other words, more than 2 per cent of the entire population has been maimed by armed conflict.
But the underlying burden is far greater. Syria's population, like the rest of the developed world, had for years been lifted up by the safety net of modern medicine. Now that it has been taken away, people are falling hard. Around six million are refugees in their own country, living in crowded, unhygienic temporary shelters, bombed out buildings, or wherever they can – served only by undersupplied, undermanned field clinics.
Kidney failure and some cancers – conditions that would previously have been managed by dedicated professionals in specialist clinics – have now become death sentences. Diseases that had been nearly or totally eradicated have returned.
In countries with poor sanitation, early exposure leads to increased immunity to many diseases. But in Syria, these natural defenses have not built up in populations that were, until now, protected by a fully developed health system and civil infrastructure. The situation is most dire in rebel-held and Kurdish northern regions bordering Turkey, which have become no-go areas for UN and WHO supply lines out of Damascus. Ragtag health committees have been set up in individual towns and regions, often by a few brave local nurses and doctors who have refused to flee, and supported by NGOs. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), for example, runs six hospitals in northern Syria with local help.
Natalie Roberts, a British doctor who spent nine months in northern Syria with MSF, said that she had seen children as young as eight dying of liver failure caused by hepatitis A contracted from unclean drinking water – something unheard of before.
In Aleppo and surrounding towns, sandflies that breed in rubble and rubbish tips have multiplied amid the ruins and are spreading leishmaniasis – a skin disease that was dubbed "Jericho Buttons" by British soldiers when they encountered it in Palestine during the First World War because of the big, painful and disfiguring ulcers it forms upon the skin.
"The dramatic picture we see of Syria is of war trauma injuries," Dr Roberts says. "But underneath there is also a huge problem with everyday healthcare. It's like they're going backwards in time, at a rate of a decade a month. All the medicines are running out. When they run out of antibiotics they'll be in the pre-penicillin era."
Only once in the past year did the world's attention turn to Syria's health crisis, when the country recorded its first case of polio since 1999 – as a consequence of a broken health system. Previously 85 to 90 per cent of Syrian children were immunized against it early. Today around half don't get their vaccine.
Dr Roberts recounts the story of one girl in a village near Al-Safira, who accidentally burned herself. The injuries were not major, let alone life-threatening. But the village was cut off from any kind of hospital or clinic and healthcare workers could not get in because the front line cut off access. For three months, the girl lay on a wooden bed in the shelter where her family lived, scared to move for fear of brushing her burns.
"When eventually the frontline moved on and an MSF team reached the village, the girl had pressure sores the like of which I have never seen," Dr Roberts says. "Anyone with any nursing skills would know that […] she needed to be turned regularly. But no one knew that in their shelter. She had become malnourished and contracted pneumonia, lying still in that shelter for three months. We tried, but after five days, she died. She was three years old."
Throughout Syria, the same kinds of winter illnesses are likely to kill thousands.
"We are far from doing enough," Ms Hoff says. "I would just like to say to people please don't forget Syria. They are wonderful people. They need help."

Most Americans say this is the worst Congress they had

A new poll suggests Americans think their current Congress is the worst they have had in their lifetime, blaming both Democrats and Republicans for adopting bad policies.
The CNN/ORC International poll released on Thursday indicates 73% of Americans believe Congress "has so far done nothing to address the country's problems."
CNN breaks the poll down along establishment political lines.
"Negative attitudes extend to both sides of the aisle: 52% believe that the policies of the Democratic leaders in Congress would move the country in the wrong direction; 54% say the same about the policies of congressional Republicans," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.
54% disagree with the policies of the Obama administration.
"Assuming lawmakers don't pick up the pace next year, and that's a safe bet as 2014 is an election year, this will become the least productive Congress in at least the last four decades," explains the CNN Political Unit.
Earlier polls demonstrate overwhelming dissatisfaction with Congress is nothing new.
In July, an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll indicated "83 percent of Americans disapprove of Congress' job, which is an all-time high in the survey. What's more, President Barack Obama has seen his job-approval rating dip to its lowest level since August 2011," according to NBC News.
Increasingly, Americans are looking beyond the establishment branded two party political system.
A poll conducted in October by the Public Religion Research Institute shows nearly one-quarter of Americans qualify as libertarians or lean toward a libertarian political philosophy, according to the Washington Post.
Most libertarians, the survey revealed, do not consider themselves as members of the tea party.
The poll is tempered by numbers in the other direction. The Washington Post posted an infographic alongside the article showing strong support for communalist political philosophies.
Communalism, or communism lite, is regarded as the political opposite of libertarianism.

Israel smashed Palestinians' homes in cold Christmas Eve

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees has strongly condemned Israel's aggressive demolition of Palestinian Bedouin dwellings in the West Bank, calling for an immediate halt.
"UNRWA condemns the latest demolitions in the West Bank, which displaced 68 people, the most recent of which occurred on Christmas Eve," spokesman Chris Gunness said in a statement.
"The demolitions took place in Ein Ayoub near Ramallah and Fasayil al-Wusta near Jericho in the Jordan valley with 61 persons displaced in Ein Ayoub, and seven persons, all refugees, displaced in Fasayil al-Wusta," Gunness said. He added that 32 of those displaced were children, "including a five year old girl who is paralyzed from the waist down."
"In addition, some 750 head of sheep and goats are without shelter at this crucial lambing season," he said.
Gunness stated that at least 663 Palestinian buildings - including 259 homes - have been demolished, and 1,103 Palestinians have been displaced in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this year.
The spokesman urged Israel to obey international laws and halt demolitions.
Israel maintains that it only dismantles buildings that were put up without permission. But Palestinians say they are almost never granted permits.
The UN has continuously spoken out against demolitions in the West Bank. Earlier in December, the United Nations decried Israel's decision to destroy over two dozen Palestinian properties in the West Bank, issuing a statement accusing Israel of pushing the same Palestinian families out of their homes in less than two weeks.
Moreover, dozens of NGOs have asked Israel not to continue the demolitions. Palestinian leaders maintain that resettlement efforts must cease if there is ever to be any chance of peace with Israel.
"Demolitions often occur to facilitate the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, with 60 percent of demolitions occurring in Palestinian communities close to settlement zones," Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Oxfam, and other rights groups declared in a joint statement earlier in December.

Terrorist attack on gas pipeline near Damascus
Foreign-backed militants operating inside Syria have blown up a gas pipeline in the countryside of the capital, Damascus, causing power outage in a southern region.
Syrian Minister of Electricity, Imad Khamis said on Thursday that Takfiri terrorists targeted the Arab gas pipeline in al-Baitariyeh area, in Damascus Countryside, which feeds Tishreen and Deir Ali electricity generation stations.
The attack caused blackout in some southern regions, he said.
In a statement, Khamis said the Ministry is working to continue electricity feeding to the rest areas and restore electricity situation to normal soon.
Syria's Petroleum Minister Sleiman al-Abbas said the fire which broke out due to the blast was brought under control.
A similar bombing attack by militants near Damascus International Airport in October caused a nationwide power outage.
In July, the militants blew up gas and fuel pipelines that feed power stations in the country's south and caused power cuts in the provinces of Dara'a, Sweida, Quneitra, Damascus and Rif Dimashq.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting militants operating inside the country, reports say.
According to the United Nations, more than 120,000 people have been killed and millions displaced so far due to the turmoil in the country.
The UN also says more than four million other Syrians will be forced out of their homes in 2014 by the escalating conflict in the nation.

Syrian Warplanes Target ISIL HQ in Aleppo Countryside

The Syrian warplanes targeted the headquarters of ISIL (The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) terrorist group in Aleppo northern countryside, inflicting heavy losses upon its militants.Syria Army Strikes ISIL
Al-Manar correspondent in Aleppo reported that the Syrian warplanes bombarded the militant headquarters near Andan, destroying the Signal operations room of the Free Syrian Army.
The Syrian army also targeted the militants' gatherings in Harbatan, killing a large number of them.
In the bordering town of Aazaz, media reports asserted that several ISIL commanders were killed when the Syrian army shelled their headquarters.
Militants Surrender in Maadamieht Sham
In a different context, the Syrian militants in the town of Maadamieht Sham concluded an agreement with the authorities, according to which they will surrender to the army which, in turn, will settle their situations.
The agreement also states that the militants will gradually hand all their weapons and that the Syrian flag will be raised across the town.
The local residents, who were exploited by the militants as human shields, will be evacuated so that the army could eradicate the foreign militants and liberate the town from ISIL and Nusra terrorists that rejected the agreement.

Tapi yang buat lagi kagum, dia sekolah seperti biasa walaupn dh khwin, masa pregnant dan dah ada ank pun masih sekolah siap bawa baby dia lagi, seorang ummi yg tabah dan kuat, tak dpt bayangkn mcm mna dia boleh uruskn keluarga dia dgn baik sementara diri dia seorg pelajar sekolah, dan skrg dia baru habis belajar..her little mujahud do cute dan soleh...
Alhamdulilah semoga lebih ramai lagi anak muda berani dan yakin yang sebenarnya Bercinta Selepas Nikah lebih indah :)

"Ich bin kein Terrorist" Putsch-Gegner wehren sich
Seit dem Militärputsch im Juli dieses Jahres, halten die Proteste gegen den Putsch an. Der Sprecher des Innenministeriums, Hani Abdel-Latif, kündigte nun harte Strafen für Anti-Putsch Demonstranten an.
Unter dem neuen "Anti-Terror Gesetz" sollen Demonstranten die für den – vom Militär – abgesetzten Präsidenten Mohammed Mursi auf die Straße gehen, für bis zu fünf Jahren ins Gefängnis. Abdel-Latif erklärte dem Staatsfernsehen weiter "und diejenigen die diese Demonstrationen anführen, können die Todesstrafe erhalten."
Nach dem Selbstmordanschlag in Mansura am 24. Dezember, erklärte die Regierung am nächsten Tag die Muslimbruderschaft zum Schuldigen und stufte sie erstmals und offiziell als Terrororganisation ein. Obwohl die aus dem Sinai stammende Gruppe Ansar Bait Al-Makdis sich dazu bekannte und die Muslimbruderschaft den Anschlag verurteilte.
Es fallen von jetzt an also alle, die mit der ersten frei-gewählten ägyptischen Regierung, unter Mohammed Mursi, sympathisieren und den Putsch verurteilen, dem Anti-Terror Gesetz zum Opfer. Selbst, wenn es in Form friedlicher Demonstrationen geschiet.
Schon nach dem ersten Tag der neuen Einstufung der Organisation, wurden mindestens 20 Muslimbrüder – u.a. in Alexandria – verhaftet, denen "Mitgliedschaft in einer Terrororganisation" vorgeworfen wird.
Saudi-Arabien folgte einen Tag darauf dem Beispiel und lässt im Königreich nun ebenfalls jene verhaften, die sich zur Muslimbruderschaft bekennen.
Das ägyptische Innenministerium eröffnete außerdem drei Telefonleitungen, bei denen Bürger anrufen können um vermeintliche Muslimbrüder zu melden.

I asked God to save my nation from being destroyed by natural calamities and He gave it to me. I asked God to protect my nation from defeat at the hands of a foreign enemy and He gave it to me. I asked God to save my nation from being destroyed from within, and He did not give it to me.' (Ibn Khuzaimah) Introduction 'Dominion over palm and pine'; that's how the British Empire was described by the historians. By the late 17th century it had colonized many parts of the world, including vast regions of the Muslim world. Colonization was not only about exploiting natural resources; but also to indoctrinate the conquered peoples to uphold British ideology and faith. Missionaries worked feverishly in different areas of the British Empire to spread the message of Christianity. Schools were set up and different tactics were employed to reach their goals. As the Muslims began to realize the danger of what they were facing, they united, mobilized and launched 'freedom' assaults to free their lands from the clutches of the ruthless Empire. Hand to hand combat and armed confrontations were nothing new to the British, but as the Muslim attacks grew relentless and deadlier, they adopted a new tactic, 'divide and dominate'. Instead of squaring off with the Muslims face to face, they incited individuals among the Muslims to form their own groups and to split away from Mainstream Sunni Islam. Ideological warfare was launched against the Muslims, as were the instructions of Louis IX, the so called "Lieutenant of God on Earth" who failed miserably in his Crusader attempts. One of the groups that formed during that time were the Qadiyani group, also known as Ahmadis, which came into existence in the year 1889. Fable Steps to Fame Of course, not just anyone can come up and announce himself to be a 'Prophet' of God. Mirza Ghulam Ahmed understood this and took his mission one step at a time. Initially he claimed to be a Revivalist of Islam. He said: "We are Muslims. We believe in the One God without a partner and in the Testimony of Faith. We believe in the Book of God, the Quran, in His Messenger Muhammad. We believe in angels, the resurrection, Hell and Paradise. We observe the prescribed prayers and the fast. We turn to the Qibla for prayers and forbid ourselves what is forbidden by God and His Prophet and permit ourselves what is permitted. We add not a thing to the Islamic Law, nor subtract any thing from it. Islamic law is above change." With claims such as this and possessing powerful articulate skills, he was able to gain considerable ground with many Muslims. In the year 1891 he claimed to be the 'Promised Messiah' and the Mahdi. Finally, in the year 1901 he took the plunge and announced that he was a Prophet of God. The 31 flavors of Qadiyanism… In order for Mirza to gain favor with all people, he incorporated into his faith elements of every religion that was present in his area; thus, his doctrine incorporated Indian, Sufi, Islamic, and Western elements. Mirza Ghluam Ahmed had claimed so many things that it is difficult to chronologically arrange them. a. He claimed to be God and the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. He has written,"I saw in my dreams that I AM ALLAH/God and I believed, no doubt I am The One Who created the Heavens." [Aaina-e-Kamaalaat] b. He claimed to be nine prophets. He said, "I am Adam. I am Noah. I am Abraham. I am Ishmael. I am Moses. I am Jesus and I am Muhammad." [Roohaani Khazaaim] c. He claimed to be the mother of Prophet Jesus and then he claimed to be Prophet Jesus himself. He said the 'first God' converted him into Mary. After two years, God made him pregnant for ten months, after which God converted him into Jesus. [Roohaani Khazaain] d. He claimed that he was Muhammad, the Messenger of God. "Muhammad is the Messenger of God and those with him are hard against the disbelievers and merciful amongst themselves."(Quran 48:29) He claimed that in this divine revelation, he himself was named Muhammad and also the Messenger. [Roohaani Khazaain, vol. 18, page 207] e. He claimed to be the Mahdi and the Promised Messiah, though he did not fulfill any of the conditions laid by Prophet Muhammad regarding the Mahdi and the Promised Messiah. f. In a lecture given in Sialkot in 1904, he declared that God had informed him that Krishna who had appeared among the Aryas thousands of years ago was indeed a prophet of God upon whom the Holy Spirit descended from God, but that later his teachings were corrupted and he began to be worshipped. Here he claimed that he was the avatar whom the Hindus were awaiting in the latter days, and that he had appeared in the likeness of Krishna invested with the same qualities.[1] Breakout The Ahmadiyah group split into two individual groups. This occurred after the death of Hakim Noor-ud-Din, the first successor of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed. The first group is known as 'Ahmadiyya Muslim Community' and the second, the smaller one, is known as'Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement for the Propagation of Islam'. The differences between the two can be summarized in two points. The first point is their belief regarding the prophethood of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed. The Lahore Ahmadiyya group considers Mirza Ghulam Ahmad a Prophet in the metaphorical sense of the word; whereas, the Ahmadiyyah Muslim Community holds that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was a Prophet, holding all necessary qualities a Prophet should have. The second difference is how they view mainstream Sunni Muslims. (Quran 12:102) Consider the verses: "And We gave Moses the Scripture, after We had destroyed the former generations, as enlightenment for the people and guidance and mercy that they might be reminded. And you, [O Muhammad], were not on the western side [of the mount] when We revealed to Moses the command, and you were not among the witnesses [to that] but We produced [many] generations [after Moses], and prolonged was their duration. And you were not a resident among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our verses, but We were senders [of this message]. And you were not at the side of the mount when We called [Moses] but [were sent] as a mercy from your Lord to warn a people to whom no Warner had come before you that they might be reminded. And if not that a disaster should strike them for what their hands put forth [of sins] and they would say, 'Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses and been among the believers?'" (Quran 28:43-47) These events in the story of Moses were related by Muhammad. Either he witnessed them and was present there, or learned it from those who knew. In either case, he would not be God's prophet. The only other possibility, rather an inescapable conclusion, is that Muhammad was taught by God Himself. A few facts must be considered to recognize the full strength of the argument. Muhammad did not learn from any religious scholar, there were no Jewish or Christian scholars in Mecca at the time, and he did not know any language other than Arabic. In addition to the previous, he could neither read nor write. No Meccan, Jew, or Christian ever claimed to be Muhammad's teacher. Had Muhammad learned from any source, his own companions who believed in him would have exposed him. "Say, 'If God had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you, for I had remained among you a lifetime before it. Then will you not reason?'" (Quran 10:16) Despite their strong opposition, the unbelievers could not attribute his knowledge of the past and present to any source. The failure of his contemporaries is sufficient proof against all later skeptics. The Correction of Jewish and Christian Misunderstandings Below are two examples of the Quran correcting what had undergone change in Jewish and Christian beliefs: (1) The Jews claim Abraham to be a Jew, the father of the Jewish nation, whereas the Christians consider him to be their father as well, as the Roman Catholic Church calls Abraham "our father in Faith" in the Eucharistic prayer called Roman Canon recited during Mass. God responds to them in the Quran: "O People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham while the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Then will you not reason?" (Quran 3:65) (2) The Quran forcefully denies the crucifixion of Jesus, an event of immense proportions to both religions: "And [We cursed them] for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of God and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, 'Our hearts are wrapped' [i.e., sealed against reception]. Rather, God has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few. And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander, And [for] their saying, 'Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of God.' And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain." (Quran 4:155-157) This Quranic denial raises some fundamental questions. First, if Islamic doctrine were borrowed from Judaism and Christianity, why did it deny crucifixion? After all, both religions agree it took place! For the Jews, it was Jesus the imposter who was crucified, but for Christians, it was the Son of God. The Prophet Muhammad could have easily agreed to the crucifixion of Jesus, this giving more credit to his message. If Islam were a false religion, an imitation of Judaism or Christianity, or if Muhammad was not true in his claim, Islam would not take an uncompromising stand on this issue and declare both religions to be outright wrong in this matter, as there is nothing as such to gain by its denial. Second, if Islam had borrowed the myth of crucifixion from these two religions, it would have eliminated a point of major contention with them, but Islam brought the truth and could not vindicate a myth just to appease them. It is quite possible the Jews were responsible for crucifying Jesus, for their historical transgressions against the prophets of God has been documented in the bible and the Quran alike. But in regards to Jesus, the Quran states forcefully: "And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him." How is it possible, then, to say that the Muhammad produced the Quran by information learnt from Jewish or Christian scholars when he brought ideologies uprooting their doctrine? Third, the denial of crucifixion by itself negates other Christian beliefs: (i) Jesus' atonement for sin's of man. (ii) Burden of original sin carried by all men. (iii) Deconstructs the myth of the cross and its veneration. (iv) The last supper and the Eucharist. Thus we see that the stories the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, told of nations of past were not mere folklore, nor were they learnt from Jewish or Christian learned men. Rather, they were revealed to him from above the seven heavens by the God of creation.
