    Es war wieder einer dieser bizarren Auftritte des Ratko Mladic: ein Winken ins Publikum zum Verhandlungsbeginn, zwischendurch das berühmte zynische Grinsen und schließlich die etwas skurrile Bitte ans Gericht, man möge ihm doch sein Gebiss bringen. Er habe seine Zähne im Untersuchungsgefängnis vergessen und könne daher nicht richtig sprechen, erklärte Mladic, der wieder einmal den Raufbold gab, der sich nicht an die Spielregeln hält. Richtig böse wurde der 71-Jährige, als Richter O-Gon Kwon ihn dazu drängte, den Eid abzulegen.

    "Ich kann vor diesem Gericht nicht aussagen. Ich erkenne es nicht an", sagte Mladic. "Sie setzen mich unter Druck, so wie sie mein ganzes Volk unter Druck setzen. Sie schaden meiner Gesundheit. Das ist kein Gericht der Gerechtigkeit. Es ist eine Erfindung der NATO. Es ist ein satanisches Gericht, das uns zur Rechenschaft zieht, nur weil wir Serben sind, die ihr Volk gegen Leute wie Sie verteidigen."

    Mladic gab den zornigen, aufbrausenden Ex-General. Die Richter hatten ihn gegen seinen Willen vorgeladen und nun bekamen sie die Quittung dafür. Sein Mandant sei gar nicht in der Lage, im Prozess gegen Radovan Karadzic auszusagen, erklärte Mladics Anwalt Branko Lukic: "Unserer Ansicht nach kann und möchte Herr Mladic nicht aussagen, wegen seines schlechten Gesundheitszustandes. Die Mediziner haben uns erklärt, dass Herr Mladic unter anderem an Erinnerungstäuschungen leidet, das heißt, dass jemand nicht zwischen Wahrheit und Fiktion unterscheiden kann."

    Der unter anderem wegen Völkermordes angeklagte Karadzic verfolgte das Geschehen ruhig, aber mit sorgenvollem Blick. Erst nach einer längeren Unterbrechung bekam er tatsächlich die Chance, seinem Weggefährten von einst ein paar Fragen zu stellen. Doch der Herr General antwortete ausweichend oder gar nicht. Er wolle lediglich ein siebenseitiges Statement verlesen, das er in der Nacht zuvor verfasst habe, wiederholte Mladic immer wieder.

    Ansonsten verweigere er die Aussage. Nach einer guten Stunde war die Mladic-Show dann beendet. Karadzic hatte gehofft, dass sein früherer Armeechef ihn als Zeuge entlasten würde. Dass er den Richtern sagen würde, Karadzic sei als politischer Anführer der bosnischen Serben über die Massenexekution von Muslimen in Srebrenica zu keiner Zeit unterrichtet gewesen.

    Diese Hoffnungen des Angeklagten wurden enttäuscht. Mladic ist einer der letzten Zeugen im Prozess gegen den 68-Jährigen. Die Beweisaufnahme steht kurz vor dem Abschluss.

    Syria rebels may lift deadly siege on Aleppo's villages

    A strict siege imposed by Syria militants over three villages in Aleppo may be lifted as part of the agreements to be made in Syria talks, the Syrian opposition spokesman has said.

    Residents of three villages of Nubul, al-Zahra and al-Foua have been suffering under a deadly siege for more than a year that has left them struggling with severe humanitarian supply shortage.

    The area has also been used as human shield to stop Syrian army improvements in the vast northwestern province.

    Louay al-Safi told reporters at the end of a morning session of talks in Geneva that the so-called Free Syrian Army may relieve pressure on the three villages.

    The Syrian government has also pledged to help sending humanitarian aid to some areas in Homs, which was the epicenter of the war that has gripped Syria for nearly three years.

    Saudi-backed groups entered Nubbul and al-Zahra at the beginning of the insurgency in March 2011, but in July 2012 they completely blocked the area letting no food, medicine and supplies to enter. No one could leave the area or enter as well.

    In May 2013, a group of a thousand people tried to break the siege, but they were faced with militants who attacked the group and killed and arrested many of them.

    They beheaded 10 men and hung their heads at the entrance of the area so that no one else would run.

    There are daily reports of abduction and killing of citizens in the area by terrorist groups who often film their crimes and post them on the internet.

    Syria sank into war in March 2011 when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.

    The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

    US congress secretly approves arming Syria militants

    American lawmakers have secretly approved the provision of US arms to militants fighting against the Syrian government.

    US lawmakers voted behind closed doors in order to fund the arms deliveries through the end of the 2014 fiscal year, which ends on September 30, Reuters reported.

    Reuters' report, which was based on information provided by US and European security officials, also said that most of the US weapons are being delivered to foreign-backed militants in the south of Syria via Jordan.

    The news comes as negotiations for a peaceful solution to the nearly three-year-old Syrian conflict are due to resume in Geneva, Switzerland, after Monday's talks between representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition hit a deadlock over the issue of transfer of power.

    Funding for arms deliveries to militants in Syria was approved by US Congress in the classified sections of defense appropriation legislation. It is not clear when lawmakers voted for the funding, though they passed unclassified defense funding in late December.

    On Monday, US officials also said that Washington would resume providing "non-lethal" aid to "opposition groups" in Syria after the seizure of warehouses by their rival groups, al-Qaeda-linked insurgents, prompted a sudden cutoff of Western supplies.

    Syria sank into war in March 2011 when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.

    US resumes aid to militants in Syria

    As negotiations between Syrian officials and the country's foreign-backed opposition hit a deadlock over the issue of transfer of power, the United States has resumed deliveries of aid to the opposition.

    The "non-lethal" aid comes more than a month after al-Qaeda-linked insurgents seized warehouses and prompted a sudden cutoff of Western supplies to other militant groups which are publically backed by Western countries.

    US officials said Monday that "the communications equipment and other items are being funneled for now only to non-armed opposition groups," according to The Associated Press.

    Experts say the aid could be seen as a US reward to the militants for their participation in ongoing peace talks with President Bashar Assad's government in Geneva, Switzerland.

    The foreign-backed militants in Syria, now split into al-Qaeda linked groups and other groups, have been fighting the Syrian government for nearly three years.

    The US officials, who weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter and demanded anonymity, told the AP that the aid was being sent through Turkey into Syria, with the coordination of the Free Syrian Army's Supreme Military Council, led by Western-backed Gen. Salim Idris.

    The halt in supplies last month was only a "precautionary measure" until the White House could once again verify the security of aid packages, the officials said.

    More than 100,000 people have died in Syria's unrests, now in its third year. Internationally brokered peace talks began last week in Geneva but have so far reached nowhere.

    The Syrian government's delegation at the talks presented a declaration of principles for negotiations but it was rejected by the other side. The foreign-backed opposition said the declaration did not mention a transition of power.

    The Syrian government insists that Syrians would choose a political system without "imposed formulas from other countries." It says the only way to decide the future of the country is through holding an election. However, the opposition and Western allies want President Assad to step down.

    Takfiri sheikh Omar Atrash confesses to Beirut bombing

    A suspect arrested in connection with a recent deadly bombing in the Lebanese capital has confessed to recruiting suicide bombers, and to having received cars rigged with explosives bound for Dahiyeh, a suburb south of Beirut.

    The Lebanese army intelligence arrested Takfiri sheikh Omar Ibrahim al-Atrash, a key al-Qaeda-linked terrorist involved in recruiting suicide bombers and planning terrorist attacks, in an operation on Friday.

    Quoting unnamed sources, al-Jadeed TV reported on Monday that because of his confessions and evidence, Atrash would not have any political protection, unlike previous suspects who had been released due to political pressure.

    This has prompted Atrash's supporters to attempt to secure religious and sectarian leverage for him.

    Sources said that investigations with Atrash were proceeding in total secrecy, to avoid any undesired interferences.

    During his arrest, the Lebanese army also confiscated numerous documents that point to his involvement with gangs that supply him with stolen cars and forging documents and license plates for such vehicles, Al Manar TV reported Friday.

    According to the report, the infamous terrorist exploited his religious appearance to move stealthily between Shtoura and Beirut.

    Al-Atrash has further been involved in transferring and guiding the suicide bombers prior to their entry into the southern suburb of Beirut and Hermel.

    Al-Atrash, who is affiliated with more than one terrorist group, worked for Sami Al-Atrash's group which is involved in Bir al-Abed and Ruwais explosions, according to the report.

    He also worked for the notorious Abdullah Azzam terrorist group, which was behind the twin bombings of the Iranian Embassy in Beirut and is widely believe to be linked to the Saudi Arabian government.

    According to the Lebanese Army, Al-Atrash is further suspected of transferring suicide bombers into Lebanon and of planning explosions across the country.

    He is also suspected of transferring terrorists into Syria and offering safe haven to those within the Lebanese territory.

    The report further points out that Al-Atrash moved to the Syrian town of Flita and Yabroud, where booby-trapped cars are prepared and transported to the southern suburb of Beirut for terror attacks.

    Die syrische Regierungsdelegation ist in Genf, um über den „Kampf gegen den Terrorismus" zu sprechen, die Opposition will dagegen eine Übergangsregierung ohne Baschar al-Assad aushandeln.

    Assad sieht jedoch keinerlei Grund dafür, Macht abzugeben. Iran, Russland und die Hisbollah stehen militärisch wie wirtschaftlich an seiner Seite, international hat er sich durch das Chemiewaffenabkommen als Verhandlungspartner rehabilitiert. Angesichts des Vormarsches von al-Qaida erscheint er manch westlichem Politiker auch schon wieder als das „kleinere Übel".

    Wer vor einem schnellen Abgang Assads warnt, weil Dschihadisten das Machtvakuum füllen könnten, verkennt die Realität im Land. Es ist nicht der Sturz des Regimes, der al-Qaida womöglich an die Macht bringt. Es sind die anhaltenden Kämpfe, das Nichtstun des Westens und die Ignoranz der restlichen Welt, die al-Qaida schon jetzt an die Macht führen.

    Assad selbst hat extremistische Gruppen groß gemacht. Er hat sein Land so zerstören lassen, dass sich Dschihadisten im Chaos einrichten konnten. Und er profitiert von ihrer Präsenz, da sie seine Propaganda vom Kampf gegen den Terror bestätigen und Zwietracht unter seinen Gegnern gesät werden kann. Assad als Verbündeten im Kampf gegen al-Qaida zu betrachten ist deshalb absurd. Seine „Terroristen" sind nicht die Mitglieder des Al-Qaida-Ablegers Islamischer Staat im Irak und in der Levante (Isil), sondern Zivilisten in den Vororten von Damaskus, in Aleppo und Homs.

    In der Realität bekämpft nicht das Regime Isil, sondern die Rebellen, die in den „befreiten" Gebieten mit den Terroristen konfrontiert sind und ihnen jetzt den Krieg erklärt haben. Statt gemeinsam auf den Sturz des Regimes hinzuarbeiten, kämpfen diese jetzt an zwei Fronten: gegen Assad und gegen al-Qaida.
    Syriens Rebellen sind so gesehen ein unübersichtlicher Haufen verschiedener Brigaden, von denen sich manche rhetorisch kaum von Al-Qaida-Gruppen unterscheiden. Vor allem die Mitglieder der Islamischen Front, also Syriens lokal verwurzelte Islamistengruppen, wirken ähnlich radikal wie Isil. Aber es gibt einen entscheidenden Unterschied.

    Isil will ein Kalifat in der gesamten Region und eine Weltherrschaft des Islam etablieren, die Islamische Front will Syrien von Assad befreien und danach einen wie auch immer gearteten islamischen Staat errichten. Isil, das ist transnationaler Terrorismus; die Rebellen der Islamischen Front dagegen kämpfen für Selbstbestimmung. Dass sie wie salafistische Hardliner klingen, hat mit ihren Finanziers zu tun – Saudi-Arabien, Katar, der Türkei und anderen Golfstaaten. Je islamischer eine Gruppe auftritt, desto mehr Geld und Waffen bekommt sie.
