Death toll from attacks in Syria's Homs now at 100: NGO
Twin car bombs claimed by militants on a government-held district of Syria's third city Homs killed at least 100 people, mostly civilians, a monitoring group says, sharply raising an earlier toll.
Tuesday's attack was the deadliest of its kind in Homs since the Syrian conflict erupted three years ago, and came as government forces make a new attempt to overrun the handful of remaining militant enclaves in the city center.
Al-Qaeda's Syria affiliate, al-Nusra Front, said it carried out the twin bombings against the city's Abbasiyeh neighborhood, which is mainly inhabited by members of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite minority community.
"God allowed the al-Nusra Front's fighters to achieve a feat despite draconian security measures," the hardline Sunni group said.
"It is so that they (the residents of pro-government areas) taste the hell that our brothers have tasted," it added.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had initially reported a toll of at least 51 dead and scores wounded from the bombings but raised that Wednesday to at least 100 dead.
Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said the bombers had not come from inside the city's militant enclaves but from elsewhere.
"It's a message from the rebels to Assad that there won't be any safe zones to hold the election in," he said.
Also on Tuesday, mortar fire killed 14 people in Damascus, the state SANA news agency reported, blaming militants in the outskirts of the capital.
Syria sank into war in 2011 when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.
The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

China station blast kills three, wounds 79: state media
Three people have been killed and 79 others injured in an explosion at a railway station in Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang region, state media report.
The explosion on Wednesday, which state news agency Xinhua called a "violent terrorist attack", came on the same day that President Xi Jinping ended a visit to the restive region.
The blast occurred at around 7pm local time at the south railway station in Urumqi, Xinhua news agency said.
It added that the explosion was "centered around luggage left on the ground between the station exit and a public bus stop," citing witnesses.
Ambulances and police cars rushed to the scene, Xinhua said.
The station was closed after the incident and services suspended but it has since been reopened. Police evacuated people from nearby areas, the state news agency quoted an officer as saying.
Initially witnesses posted photos on social media site Weibo, showing debris and luggage scattered around, though these were not independently verified.
Many posts relating to the explosion have since been removed, including images from apparent witnesses, and posts from news organizations detailing the incident.
The vast and nominally autonomous region of Xinjiang, where mostly Muslim Uighurs are the largest ethnic group, is periodically hit by deadly clashes that authorities blame on terrorists.
Xi, during a visit which ended Wednesday, called for tougher law enforcement but also for stepped-up assimilation of minorities.
While fighting terrorism, China will deploy a "strike-first" strategy against terrorists in the region to deter enemies and inspire people, Xinhua quoted him as saying.
But he added that Beijing would implement "appropriate policies to improve ethnic harmony and common prosperity of all ethnic groups".

Exclusive video: Al-Nusra terrorists in Syria confess receiving orders from Arabs, Turks
A number of al-Nusra terrorists has told Al-Alam that they had received orders from foreigners including Arabs and Turks to attack government and public properties in Syria.
The terrorists, who were arrested by Syrian troops in recent operations across Syria, said that nationals from Turkey, Libya, France, Egypt, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Jordan and Algeria are fighting against the Syrian Army.
The al-Nusra members also thanked Syrian troops for their humanitarian behavior with them.
The confessions came as reports say Qatar is training foreign-backed militants operating against the Syrian government as part of Doha's efforts to topple President Bashar al-Assad.
According to French media reports, militants from the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA), the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups receive training in the tiny Arab monarchy before being sent to Syria.
The reports further noted that the militants are equipped with anti-tank missiles and global position system (GPS) devices supplied by the United States.
The militants spend one week in Turkey for a medical check-up and then head for Qatar where they undergo three weeks of training.
According to a militant source, around 100 militants are dispatched to Qatar every month to be trained before going to Syria.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Damascus says the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- have been fuelling the unrest by providing militants with money and weapons.
The Turkish daily Aydinlik has said in a recent report the former commander of FSA, Salim Idris, acted as a middleman in the transfer of US-made TOW anti-tank missiles from Turkey to the militants in Syria.
About a dozen militants have been trained in Turkey on how to use the weapons, the report said.
Earlier this month, Israeli daily Haaretz said that Tel Aviv is seeking to launch a joint operation with Saudi Arabia to train the foreign-backed militants operating in Syria.

'Benghazi attack possibly linked to US efforts of moving missiles out of Libya'
The 2012 Benghazi attack could have about covert CIA efforts of moving surface-to-air missiles out of Libya and transporting them to militants in Syria, a political commentator says.
"It may have had to do with transporting shoulder-mounted antiaircraft missiles, whether they were stingers or variations thereon, to even the resistance [of] the rebels in Syria and where ambassador Stevens may have wanted to recover those missiles less they fallen to the wrong hands because they were extremely dangerous and take down civilian or military aircraft on either side," James Fetzer, professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota Duluth, said on Wednesday during a phone interview with Press TV.
Republican lawmakers said on Tuesday that newly released emails on the attack in Benghazi include "the smoking gun" that shows a White House official urged that the assault on the US consulate be blamed on a protest that never happened.
According to CNN, up to 35 CIA operatives were working in the Libyan city of Benghazi during the attack on the US consulate that resulted in the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other three other US diplomats on September 11, 2012.
Congressional Republicans have been pushing for a wide-ranging investigation into suspicions that the Obama administration has withheld details of its activities in Benghazi.
Fetzer told Press TV that the Benghazi attack "appears to have far more complicated, deliberate, and organized."
"What it seems to me that we have here further confirmation that Barack Obama was disingenuous when he responded to John Kerry's challenge about Benghazi during the debate, but also the Hillary Clinton would be in difficult, deep waters over this if she should decide to run for president," he added.
"I think that the American people and indeed the international community deserve to know the truth about Benghazi. And that it's long past time for the Obama administration to come clean about one of the very peculiar events that's occurred here in the last several years with regards to international likings and developments in the Middle East," Fetzer concluded.

Bahraini regime oppression seems to be continuing: Professor
Press TV has conducted an interview with William Beeman, professor at the University of Minnesota from San Jose, about a court in Bahrain sentencing five anti-regime activists to five years in prison on terrorism charges.
What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Professor, how do you see the recent developments in Bahrain? How much has the situation tipped in favor of the people or the regime?
Beeman: Well the regime keeps repressing the people. I should note that from thenews piece that I have seen that the people who are arrested in this latest arrest were actually being arrested for activities that took place last year.
What the Bahrain government is trying to do is that there is a large auto race and they are trying to restore the reputation of the race and give a positive feed to the world news media about this race. And so they are using precautionary measures trying to arrest people who they claim have done something in the past in order to be able to give warning to potential protesters for this year.
I should also say that Reporters Without Borders have also condemned just today the Bahrain government for arresting news reporters who were trying to report on government activities.
So the government oppression continues and it does not seem to be stopping. The problem of course is that international governments especially the United States failed to condemn this.
Press TV: And why is it that the Bahraini revolution isn't treated like the other uprisings in the Arab world?
Beeman: Well quite honestly, the United States is always taking the lead in the Middle East.
The United States is the one nation that has the greatest interest in Bahrain because of the stationing of the Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf in Bahrain and if the United States did not have this port for the Fifth Fleet, they would have no naval port at all in the Persian Gulf.
Before this took place, the United States had to have long supply lines from Diego Garcia, in Tristan da Cunha in the Indian Ocean. So the US is desperate to keep this port in Bahrain and for this reason they do not criticize the government for its oppressive activities.

Diese ehrenwerte Schwester heißt Doktor Aafia Siddiqui. Sie wurde am 2. März 1972 in Karatschi (Pakistan) geboren. Heute ist sie 42-43 Jahre alt. Sie befindet sich nun seit 2003 in Gefangenschaft! Nun 12 Jahre !!! 12 JAHRE GEFANGENSCHAFT !!
Wer ist sie und was ist mit ihr passiert?
Sie ist Neurowissenschaftlerin und hat mehrere Abschlüsse, mashaAllah.
Sie war eine Schwester, die sich sehr für die Muslime und die Ummah (Gemeinschaft) einsetzte - darüber mehr in einem anderen Beitrag.
Sie besaß Nachtsichtgeräte und militärische Handbücher, daraufhin hat man sie als ein Al Qaida Mitglied abgestempelt. Es gab keine Beweise für ihre Mitgliedschaft. Sie veranstaltete mehrere Spendenveranstaltungen und unterstützte die muslimischen Gefangenen und die Mujahideen die sich im Jihad befanden. Daher wohl auch die Nachtsichtgeräte und militärischen Handbücher.
Die pakistanische Armee verkaufte Aafia Siddiqui im Jahre 2003 an die US-Soldaten.
Im Jahre 2003 wird sie vom FBI entführt, einer ihrer Söhne wird getötet und Aafia Siddiqui bleibt 5 Jahre verschwunden. 5 JAHRE wusste ihre Familie nichts von ihr, keiner wusste, wo sie steckte.
Das FBI hatte es so aussehen lassen, als würden sie nach ihr suchen, wobei sie vom FBI entführt wurde und gefoltert wurde in dieser Zeit.
Im Jahre 2008 wird sie in Afghanistan von US-Kräften in Begleitung ihres älteren Sohnes gefangen genommen. Die USA behauptete, sie hätte zweimal auf einen US-Amerikaner geschossen haben, der sie während ihrer Gefangenschaft überwachte. Es gab jedoch keine Beweise und Aafia Siddiqui's Handabdrücke wurden noch nicht einmal auf der Waffe gefunden. Stattdessen wurde sie angeschossen und erlitt eine Schusswunde.
Das Gericht verurteilt sie zu 60 Jahren Haft. September 2010 haben sie sich dazu entschlossen, ihr 86 Jahre Haft zu geben.
86 JAHRE HAFT?!?! Ein Mörder und Vergewaltiger kriegen 5 Jahre unter Luxus Bedingungen (ohne Folter) Haftstrafen und eine Frau, die Nachtsichtgeräte und Handbücher besitzt kriegt 86 Jahre??? WAS TAT SIE? DEN MUSLIMEN HELFEN!!! Das ist ihr Verbrechen?!?!
Anfangs saß sie im amerikanischen Foltergefängnis namens "Baghram" in Afghanistan fest. Dort wurde sie zahlreich vergewaltigt und gefoltert. Durch ihre Geschichte wurde sie als "Gefangene 650" bekannt. Ein Mitarbeiter des "Roten Kreuzes" nannten Aafia Siddiqui auch als "Der Geist von Baghram" aufgrund ihren schlechten Gesundheitszustandes. Sie erlitt psychische Probleme und ihr körperlicher Zustand ist bis heute noch sehr kritisch.
Ihr Gesundheitszustand:
- Sie hat nun einen Gehirnschaden aus ihrer Zeit in Gefangenschaft
- Eine ihrer Nieren wurde entfernt während ihrer Gefangenschaft
- Sie kann ihr Essen nicht verdauen weil ihr Teile von ihren Gedärmen entfernt wurden in ihrer Gefangenschaft
- Sie hat mehrere Lagen vernähter Haut von der Operation wegen der Schusswunde
- Sie hat eine große Operationsnarbe entlang ihres gesamten Oberkörpers
