This is such an important initiative the importance of which cannot be understated, especially at a time when peoples' opinions on Islam, Muslims and so-called contentious, misunderstood narratives are by and large formed by way of a largely biased media machine intent with its own agenda and ulterior motives. To sit and have a civilised discussion no matter how much we disagree with the other side is imperative in this day, age and political climate. The recording will be released soon so rather than give a run down of what happened, (others are doing a much better job than my goldfish memory will allow) I thought i'd share a conversation with Professor Peter Cave after the event. Earlier in the discussion he spoke about how insulted he feels when told by adherents to a religion, that he would be eternally damned to punishment in the afterlife. He was quite passionate about this point and it was obvious to anyone that he was genuinely affected by such statements. The question I posed to him was, why do you as a humanist, associating yourself with neither an organised religion nor holding belief in a divine being, react so strongly to being cast into eternal damnation when at the same time not only do you reject any such notion of an afterlife, much less heaven and hell, but also so easily relegate any and every such notion of the Almighty as nothing more than a fairytale? A mythical being who lives in the clouds invented by feeble mortals to give themselves a sense of purpose in this life. Surely if such a belief lies outside your world-view why does it affect you so much? Would you be equally offended if I (through a carefully planted mole in the North Pole) told you that I received word that Santa wouldn't be giving you any presents this year due to your unruly behaviour. Would you break down in tears? Of course not! The entire premise is ridiculous to you. I walk by numerous evangelical preachers who damn me to hell for not taking Jesus Christ as my lord and personal saviour, yet it doesn't bother me in the least as I have full conviction in my belief system.He fully understood and even acknowledged the point made but then shifted the discussion to imagining being a parent of a child who wanted to leave Islam. Would you feel comfortable as a parent condemning him/her to such a fate in the afterlife? The simple reply was well that's irrelevant as that's entirely the reason he/she left the religion in the first place as they no longer hold fast to such a belief anyway. It sort of sadly devolved especially for an academic of his calibre, into a guide to good parenting.Coming back to the original point, I said the reason why i'm picking up on this earlier statement you made was because you yourself were genuinely hurt and offended by claims which according to your belief system are null, void and totally non-applicable to you. At the same time you expect Muslims to kick back and bat away any insult to our Prophet salAllahu 'alayhi wasallam, when love for him is *enshrined in our very theology*. This is a small example of the double standards and if we're honest, pompous arrogance of many non-religious, western academics when engaging with those whose beliefs they differ with. Surprisingly he said he understood where I was coming from entirely, while offering a vague disagreement.All in all, although we obviously disagreed and debated with many of the panel members, I was grateful for the civilised opportunity to do so and hope this will inshaAllah, God Willing be the first of many more such endeavours.Oh and he said I had a lovely beard.
