The construction phase of the project, which includes four components and is led in partnership with the Palestinian Water Authority (#PWA) and Gaza's Coastal Municipalities Water Utilities (#CMWU), was launched with the laying of the first stone in March last year. The event yesterday marked the completion of an 18-kilometer long pipeline which will transfer 6,000 cubic meters of desalinated seawater from the desalination plant to at least 35,000 Palestinians living in Khan Yunis, and 40,000 in #Rafah, southern Gaza. "The needs in Gaza for fresh water are huge. Nearly 95% of water in Gaza is considered unfit for human consumption. Enormous efforts are needed to ensure that Gazans can access fresh water. This is both a fundamental human right and an urgent humanitarian need for Gaza's population," said the EU Representative John Gatt-Rutter."The completion of this pipeline today is evidence of just part of the EU's wider, long-standing commitment to supporting access to clean water for Palestinians. Such projects are even more essential and crucial following the war last summer in Gaza, which made already harsh living conditions for Gazans even more unbearable." "Limited water supply in Gaza has long meant high prices and poor water quality, but the introduction of this seawater desalination plant will help bring a dramatic improvement and help children and their families fulfill their right to safe drinking water," said June Kunugi, UNICEF Special Representative in the State of Palestine. "The advancement of the project is also a welcome sign of hope, six months after a ceasefire took hold in Gaza," she added. The construction of the desalination plant on land adjacent to the sea north of Khan Yunis and the procurement of water-treatment equipment will be completed in the coming months. The plant is expected to start operating by the end of the year. Safe drinking water is a precious commodity in Gaza - only five percent of the water extracted from the coastal aquifer has been found to be suitable for human consumption. Seawater desalination is one of the strategic options chosen by the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) to help provide 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza – including nearly one million children - with clean water. A comparative study conducted in 2011 concluded that it was an essential, pragmatic solution to provide a consistent supply of safe, drinking water to the expanding population. The desalination of seawater from the Mediterranean is essential to curb over-extraction of groundwater from the Coastal Aquifer, and to prevent an environmental disaster with the total collapse of this aquifer. A 2012 United Nations' report warned that over-extraction could render Gaza's sole aquifer unusable by 2016. الاتحاد الأوروبي واليونيسف يختتمان المرحلة الأولى من مشروع انشاء محطة تحلية مياه البحر في قطاع غزة والبالغ قيمته 10 مليون يورو غزة- 25 شباط 2015- قام الاتحاد الأوروبي واليونيسف امس باستكمال المرحلة الأولى من مشروع انشاء محطة تحلية مياه البحر في قطاع غزة والبالغ قيمته 10 مليون يورو, حيث ستوفر هذه المحطة مياه شرب نظيفة لما يزيد عن 75.000 فلسطينيا في غزة. وقد انطلقت مرحلة البناء للمشروع وهي الأولى من أربعة مراحل بالتعاون مع سلطة المياه الفلسطينية ومصلحة مياه بلديات الساحل بوضع حجر الأساس لهذا المشروع في مارس الماضي. وامس تم استكمال انشاء خط أنابيب بطول 18 كيلو مترا. حيث سينقل 6000 متر مكعب من مياه البحر المحلاة من محطة التحلية لحوالي 35.000 فلسطينيا يعيشون في خانيونس, و40.000 يعيشون في رفح, جنوب غزة. " إن الحاجة ماسة وكبيرة لوجود مياه شرب نظيفة. حيث تعتبر ما نسبته 95% من المياه في غزة غير صالحة للاستهلاك الآدمي. وهناك حاجة لجهود هائلة لضمان وصول سكان غزة الى المياه العذبة فهي حق أساسي وانساني ملح" هذا ما قاله ممثل الاتحاد الاوروبي جون جات - راتر. وأوضح " إن تدشين خط الانابيب هذا يعد دليلا مبدئيا على التزام الاتحاد الاوروبي طويل الأمد تجاه دعم وصول المياه النظيفة للفلسطينيين. وإن مثل هذه المشاريع تعد ضرورية خصوصا بعد الحرب الأخيرة على غزة الصيف الماضي والتي زادت من حدة سوء الظروف المعيشية للغزيين لمستوى لا يحتمل" وقالت جوون كونوجي, الممثل الخاص لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة للطفولة- اليونيسف- في فلسطين:" إن محدودية موارد المياه في غزة تعني بالضرورة ارتفاع أسعار المياه وسوء جودتها, ولكن انشاء محطة التحلية في غزة سيعمل على تحقيق تحسن كبير وعلى مساعدة الاطفال وعائلاتهم في الحصول على حقهم من مياه الشرب النظيفة" كما وأضافت :"إن النهوض بهذا المشروع لهو بارقة أمل, بعد مرور ستة أشهر على اعلان وقف اطلاق النار في غزة". سيتم الانتهاء من انشاء محطة التحلية على الشريط المتاخم للبحر شمال خانيونس, بالإضافة الى شراء معدات التحلية خلال الأشهر القادمة. حيث من المتوقع أن تبدأ المحطة في العمل مع نهاية العام الحالي. وتعد المياه الصالحة للشرب من السلع الثمينة في غزة- حيث وجد أن 5% فقط من المياه الجوفية المستخرجة من الساحل تعد صالحة للاستهلاك الآدمي. كما وتعد تحلية مياه البحر أحد الخيارات الاستراتيجية والتي تم اختيارها من قبل سلطة المياه الفلسطينية لتزويد ما يقرب من 1.8 مليون نسمة في غزة بما فيها مليون طفل بالمياه النظيفة. وخلصت الدراسة المقارنة والتي أجريت عام 2011 أن التحلية كانت الحل العملي والضروري لتوفير امدادات ثابتة من مياه الشرب الآمنة لتعداد السكان الآخذ في الازدياد. إن تحلية مياه البحر الأبيض المتوسط تعد خطوة ضرورية للحد من الافراط في استخراج المياه الجوفية الساحلية, وللحد من كارثة بيئية تكمن في انهيار شامل لهذه المياه الجوفية. حيث حذر تقرير الأمم المتحدة عام 2012 من أن الافراط في استخراج المياه يمكن أن يجعل مخزون المياه الجوفي الوحيد في غزة غير صالح للاستخدام مع حلول عام 2016.
