What I found very interesting is how businesses which are not traditionally related to Valentines Day are also able to use it to maximise on selling their products. An example of this is Innocent Smoothies. In 2012 Innocent Smoothies provided consumers the opportunity to design their own personalised message dubbed a "love label" that once designed, would be wrapped around an Innocent bottle and given to the person they love. For an added level of engagement, these "love labels" could then be shared on social media sites. And the list of brands and businesses selling products, services etc for this 'special' day is endless. Now it seems to me that this special day is more special for businesses than those in love! And like any other festivities or holidays, consumerism has once again hijacked Valentines Day to make people spend on things they don't need to, just so they can feel worthy. It's actually saddening to see thousands of people thinking that spending money will bring them happiness. Money doesn't buy happiness - it usually causes misery as can be seen in the affluent Western societies. So in reality this day is nothing more than another product of commercialism. Zehn Minuten braucht, wer ihre 500 Meter zu Fuß zurücklegen will. Es war eine Herausforderung so recht nach dem Geschmack von Léonardo da Vinci (Der Künstler der Mona Lisa). Der geniale Techniker und Visionär der Renaissance hatte im Jahr 1502 im fernen Florenz davon gehört, dass Sulṭân Bâyezîd-ı Sânî (II.) -Raḥimahullâh ta'âla aleyh- eine gewaltige Brücke in İslâmbol bauen lassen wollte. Über das Goldene Horn, den 500 Meter breiten Meeresarm, der die zwei Hälften der Hauptstadt seines 'Os̲mânîschem Reiches trennte- eine expandierende, wohlhabende Weltmacht. Ein halbes Jahrhundert war es da überhaupt erst her, dass Fâtiḥ Sulṭân Meḥemmed Hân (II.) -Raḥimahullâh ta'âla aleyh- diese Stadt eingenommen hatte. 1453, nach längerer Belagerung der Stadt, die zuvor noch von dem letzten Häuflein Byzantiner bewohnt gewesen war, als einsame abendländische İnsel in der weiten muslimischen Welt. Seither etablierte sich neben dem Namen Konstantinopel ein zweiter für die Stadt, zunächst für den Teil südwestlich des Goldenen Horns, >İslâmbol< Léonardo da Vinci skizzierte die Brücke aufs Papier und schickte die Zeichnung 1503 mit einem Brief an Bâyezîd. "Wie ich hörte, planen Sie, eine Brücke zu bauen von İslâmbol nach Galata, aber Sie kommen nicht weiter, weil Sie niemand mit den nötigen Fähigkeiten finden", brachte er sich etwas hoffärtig ins Spiel: "İch werde sie bauen, so hoch wie einen Bogen, dass niemand bereit sein wird, darüberzuschreiten, wegen ihrer Höhe", behauptete er, wohl nicht ganz ernst gemeint. Eine Stützweite von 240 Metern plante er, die ohne Pfeiler überwunden werden sollte. Léonardo's Pläne konnten nicht beeindrucken, als man dem Sulṭân das Schreiben -das erst 1952 in İslâmbol wiederentdeckt wurde- gab, sagten sie "Ceneviz'den Leonardo isimli kâfirin gönderdiği mektubun suretidir" (Dies ist das Schreiben eines Kâfir aus Genua Namens Léonardo). Bâyezîd-ı Sânî (II.) lud als Baumeister einen anderen, ebenfalls bekannten Florentiner ein: Michelangelo Buonarroti (auch einer der bedeutendsten Künstler der italienischen Hochrenaissance). Doch den hielten religiöse Vorbehalte ab. Er befürchtete, in İslâmbol in den islâmischen Glauben gezwungen zu werden. Da obendrein der Papst mit der Exkommunikation drohte für den Fall, dass Michelangelo dem Sulṭân seine Dienste anbieten wollte, wurde nichts aus der Reise, nichts aus der Brücke. Beide Stadthälften, die verschiedener nicht sein konnten, gesellschaftlich, religiös, wirtschaftlich, waren weiter getrennt. Dass Genies wie Léonardo und Michelangelo ins Spiel kamen, illustriert die Bedeutung des Ortes. İm siebten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert errichteten Griechen auf dem südöstlichen Ufer eine Kolonie, Byzantion. Später, unter Kaiser Konstantin, dem ersten Christenkaiser, erwuchs daraus die Hauptstadt des Ost-Römischen Reiches, daher ihr früherer Name: Konstantinopel.
